Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos, in which you tell me that your financial situation is no longer what it once was — it has deteriorated.

You know what is said about tzedakah*: 'uvechanuni na bezos*'[1]. It is also written: 'asser te'asser*'[2]. And it is also regarding tzedakah that it is said: 'lefum tza'ara agra*'[3]. Therefore, if one does not give tzedakah as one ought — that is, at least a tenth of one's earnings, and as much as possible more than that — how can one be surprised that one's financial situation deteriorates?

Nevertheless, you can also infer from this that the outcome is in your hands. If you give tzedakah immediately, in the proportion just defined or even beyond it, you have the assurance that Hashem will fulfill the promise mentioned above.

But Hashem's siyata diShmaya* always remains needed, and you will therefore set a kevi'us* for nigleh* and chassidus*, in addition to the three studies, applicable to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law the Rebbe, may his merit protect us. These are well known and concern Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* — Chitas*.

May Hashem grant you success, so that you give me good news in all these areas. May He grant that it be as quickly as possible.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק בו כותב אשר מצב הפרנסה אינו כמו שהי' לפני זה כי נגרע מאז.

והנה ידוע מאמר הקב"ה ובחנוני נא בזאת. והוא בענין הצדקה שיהי' עשר בשביל שתתעשר. וידוע ג"כ שבצדקה אמרו לפום גמלא שיחנא. ובמילא מה הפלא אם כשאין נזהרים בענין הצדקה כדבעי שהוא לכה"פ מעשר ומה טוב יותר מזה שעי"ז הנה נגרע מצב הפרנסה. אבל לאידך גיסא מזה גופא נודע שהדבר בידו הוא. שאם יוסיף תומ"י בעניני הצדקה כהנ"ל ועוד יותר הרי בטוח הוא השי"ת למלאות הבטחתו וכנ"ל. אלא שכיון שבכל דבר צ"ל סייעתא דשמיא הרי צריך לקבוע שיעור בלימוד תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות נוסף על שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים. והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בכל הנ"ל ויה"ר שיהי' זה בהקדם.
