Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2492 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 8 · Letter 247
B"H,
28 Adar Rishon 5714,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I reply to the letter you wrote me some time ago. You are not satisfied with certain points concerning the organization of the yeshivah*, and you consider that these disturb your ardor in learning and in your tefillah*. You are therefore considering going to the Lubavitch yeshivah in Eretz HaKodesh*. You ask my opinion.
It is unnecessary to remind you of an idea that is altogether obvious[1]. What disturbs limud haTorah*, tefillah, or maasim tovim* emanates from the 'se'or shebe'isa*'[2] — the yetzer hara* — which leads a person astray in various ways. For even though it is called 'foolish,' it discharges its mission with immense skill.
You know the saying of my father-in-law the Rebbe, may his merit protect us[3], that the yetzer hara approaches each person according to his own midos*. Because of this, it can sometimes assume a rabbinic appearance, full of yiras Shamayim*. Consequently, each person must analyze meticulously every idea that comes to his mind when those ideas lead him to change his avodas Hashem*. He must determine precisely their origin and verify whether they are from the right side or the left side[4].
You surely know the story about the Rebbe of Chernobyl printed in the sichah* of Pesach 5703[5]. One of the means of determining all this is to know whether the change will lead to neglecting limud haTorah and tefillah or not.
In the case at hand, you are in a yeshivah founded by tzaddikim*, leaders of their generation, and run in their spirit. Torah is learned there with yiras Shamayim. Without entering into more detail, it is virtually certain that such study is particularly profitable. It is therefore understandable that the yetzer hara deploys various strategies to prevent you from adopting conduct fully in line with the yeshivah's seder*, or to make it harder for you.
Obviously, if the yetzer hara presents itself to you with an open face and tells you outright that its intention is to disturb your learning of nigleh* and chassidus*, it is clear you will not listen to it. It is said 'vehanachash hayah arum*'[6] — and likewise, it itself acts with cunning and claims that this yeshivah prevents you from devoting yourself to study and from davening with all the necessary yiras Shamayim. In that way it has a chance of getting its arguments heard.
To be sure, the yetzer hara has to give you the assurance that once you arrive at another yeshivah it will no longer bother you, so that you will be able to learn Torah with the greatest ardor and daven in the best way. Nevertheless, it has been able to verify that you listened to its voice from the start, even though 'kol haschalos kashos*.' It therefore has no doubt that it will be able to continue holding you in its net thereafter.
Man receives bechirah chofshis*, and two paths are placed before him, as it is said: 'Re'eh nasati lefanecha hayom es hachayim ve'es hatov ve…*' Yet man is also helped to make the right decision, as it is said: 'uvacharta bachayim*.'
The same applies to your case. Even if the yetzer hara is particularly cunning, you have the kochos* to reject all its arguments, to strengthen yourself with mesirus nefesh*, by forgetting all those ideas that disturb you — the inadequacy of your surroundings, the collective responsibility for your neglect of learning and davening, the fact that you are by no means at fault.
There is no doubt that various things concerning your friends at the yeshivah can be improved, for only HaKadosh-Baruch-Hu*, Borei Olam*, is perfect. Nevertheless, to obtain such a result, it is for you to lead your friends to improve, not to suffer their influence. In this way your own faults will also be corrected by your friends.
For it is said that 'kol Yisrael areivim zeh lazeh*' and one knows what is explained on this subject. They all form one great body, and each one possesses a quality the other does not have, so that, through ahavas Yisrael*, all complete one another.
From all that has just been said it follows that you must forget all the thoughts that draw you away from learning Torah and from davening. You must invest yourself fully in the study of nigleh and chassidus and in fervent tefillah, in accordance with the organization and demands of the yeshivah. Then there will be fulfilled in you the assurance of Chazal* that 'yagaata umatzasa ta'amin*.'
You tell me about your friend, but you do not say whether he is also disturbed by the things you yourself complain of. If so, it is clear that this answer applies to him in the same way.
With my blessing for studying Torah with yiras Shamayim,
For the Rebbe Shlita,
the secretary,
