B"H,
26 Adar Rishon 5714,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Nasan Menachem[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your sefer*, the Haggadah of Pesach* with a translation in Yiddish and English, together with a collection of minhagim*, biurim*, and halachos*. By way of friendship, I leafed through it as time permitted, and I attach a few notes.
May Hashem grant you success, that you illuminate your surroundings through 'ner mitzvah veTorah ohr*' as well as through the meor sheba'Torah*, namely chassidus*, and through what is particularly necessary in our era and in this country: the practical halachos and minhagim of Yisrael.
With my respects and my blessing in all this,
P.S. If you have published other seforim, you will please send them too to my library. I thank you in advance. A Haggadah with a collection of biurim and minhagim[2], published by Kehos, has been sent to you under separate parcel.
Notes:
Page 10, and in the corresponding text of the English translation: You say that bechorim*, kohanim*, and leviim* do not fast on erev Pesach. One must really question the source of such an assertion. In any case, the halachah states that they do fast, as the Maharil says, cited by the acharonim* in siman 470.
To prevent any confusion, this should be corrected by deleting these words.
Pages 15 and 16, and in the English translation: You cite the formula[3] 'liheveh hefker ke'afra de'ar'a*' — 'let it[4] be ownerless like the dust of the earth.' Some say it in Yiddish or English and not in Aramaic. It is therefore essential to translate also 'let it be ownerless' and not only 'like the dust of the earth.' It is clear that this term is essential.
Page 19: You begin the text of Kiddush with 'Vayehi Erev*' — 'and it was evening.' Some indeed have this minhag, but the majority of communities do not. It would at least have been desirable to put these words in parentheses.
Page 29: You say that Rabbi Eliezer was a kohen. It seems to be a printer's error. You will see the introduction of the Radal* on Pirkei deRabbi Eliezer. It is in fact Rabbi Elazar.
Page 84: The mizmor 'Shir HaMaalos*' replaces 'Mizmor Livnei Korach*,' and one can ask why this should be so.
