Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2478 — Health
Volume 8 · Letter 233
B"H,
20 Adar Rishon 5714,
Brooklyn,
To my close relative, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
of illustrious lineage, Rav Shmuel Abba[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your two letters of 8 and 25 Shevat, sent in the same envelope, as well as that of 5 Adar Rishon. I thank you for what you write to me regarding the mezuzah*[2], the spice-box, and the tray. In accordance with what was transmitted to me by the chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav P. Althaus[3], I am sending you a mezuzah in exchange for the one you gave me.
The Midrash* draws a comparison between the relationship between HaKadosh-Baruch-Hu* and His servants on the one hand, and a human master and his slave on the other. In the latter case, the slave must protect and increase the master's possessions, just as the master himself does. By contrast, it is said: 'Hashem is your shomer*, Hashem is your shade upon your right hand.'
This is also alluded to in the mezuzah. Hashem's Name is inscribed on the mezuzah affixed to the door separating a man and what belongs to him from the outside. This mezuzah protects him as well as his possessions, found within his daled amos*. You also know that the Name inscribed on the back of the mezuzah[4] alludes to the 'Shomer Daltos Yisrael*'[5].
Obviously, this concerns not only the material dwelling, but applies also to what a person has in his spiritual values. The Borei Olam* protects each one of us so that our concerns and our possessions, physical and spiritual at once, should be whole, in such a way that all can carry through the shlichus* entrusted to them, here below.
What has just been said allows me to refer to what you say at the end of your letter regarding the way you will organize your life in the future.
When one observes the world, one finds that it is governed in its entirety — including the inanimate part — by the most ironclad laws. Each being has its place and its function. Nothing is superfluous. How much more is this so for man, endowed with discernment, and even more clearly so if he belongs to the people that proclaims 'Atah bechartanu mikol ha'amim*.'
Without the shadow of a doubt, without any hesitation, every Yid* indeed receives a shlichus here below. He thus has his place in life — all the more so when he comes from an illustrious family[6]. In such a case, his ancestors surely bequeathed to him special qualities.
It is said that 'zechus avosam mesayatan*' and that 'hamaaseh hu ha'ikar*.' You will therefore find the means of making concrete use of these qualities. Of course, it is not always easy to discover how to do so and in what area. But it is said that 'yagaata umatzasa ta'amin*.'
By being certain that one must discover these kochos*, by setting aside any doubt about it, by being convinced that one has the power not only to seek them out but also to bring them into manifestation, one can hasten the outcome of this process and make it more fruitful.
It is unnecessary to emphasize to you that the way of Lubavitch and of Chabad chassidim is not to give mussar*. It is clear that this is by no means my intention, chas veshalom*. I refer only to concrete action, and I am convinced that with appropriate searching, you will know how to find your path, what you must accomplish, your way of guiding those around you.
As reward, this will bring berachah* and success in your personal concerns.
With my blessing for good health and spiritual nachas* in the way you will, very soon, organize your life,
P.S. In your letter you also mention the Sefer Torah* in your possession. I would be grateful if you would send me some details on this as well.
