Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter, in which you ask whether you should go to continue your studies at the Lubavitch yeshivah* in Brooklyn. You experience difficulties at the one in Lod and your parents wish that you go to Yerushalayim[1], but the way of learning there does not suit you.

My opinion in this matter has long been well known[2]. One must learn Torah and fulfill the mitzvos* in the best possible way in the place where one finds oneself. And when one faces difficulties, their essential reason, as a rule, is not to be sought outside of the person. It is bound up with the yetzer hara* he carries within himself.

What purpose is served by going to another country, since your yetzer hara will accompany you there? It would only be a waste of time and concentration, only made greater by being in a new place, in contact with new people.

You will therefore seek the counsel of your mashpia*[3]. He will help you organize your study of nigleh* and chassidus* — in Lod or in Yerushalayim — so that you can carry out the will of the Borei*.

This way of acting will also strengthen your physical health, and it is said that 'yagaata umatzasa ta'amin*' — one who labors sees his efforts crowned with success.

במענה על מכתבו בו שואל חוות דעתי אם יסע ללמוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים אשר בברוקלין כיון שיש לו קישויים בלימודו בישיבת תו"ת אשר בלוד ומהוריו שרצו שיהי' בירושלים ת"ו ושם אופן הלימוד אינו משביע רצונו.

והנה כבר ידועה חוות דעתי מאז שצריך ללמוד תורה ולקיים מצות בהידור במקום שנמצאים ואם מוצאים קישויים בזה הנה ברובא דרובא עיקר סיבתם אינם ענינים שמחוץ להאדם אלא היצה"ר שבתוך האדם, וא"כ מה תועלת כשנוסעים למדינה אחרת כיון שגם היצה"ר נוסע ביחד עם האדם ואדרבה בלבול הזמן ופזור הנפש נגדלים ביותר ע"י מדינה חדשה ואנשים חדשים, ויתייעץ עם המשפיע שלו איך שיסדר בשבילו ענין ואופן לימוד הנגלה וחסידות אם בלוד או בירושלים באופן שיוכל למלאות רצון הבורא שבדרך ממילא ימשיך זה ג"כ תוספת בבריאות בגשמיות ויגעת ומצאת.
