Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2473 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 8 · Letter 228 · To: grand Rav
B"H,
19 Adar Rishon 5714,
Brooklyn,
To the great rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Avraham[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter of 9 Adar Rishon and was happy to learn that Hashem has given you the merit of holding public functions[2] — at the beis midrash*, the yeshivah*, and the shul*, the place of tefillah*. Chazal* say that 'hamaaseh hu ha'ikar velo hamidrash*' — the deed is essential, not the study. May Hashem grant that your teaching modify the daily action of those who receive it.
In our days, one cannot rely on those who attend a shiur* to draw the practical conclusions for themselves. Everything must be said clearly, and at the conclusion of every teaching a synthesis must be made, specifying how to act, speak, and think.
Now, one must possess deeply what one transmits to others, so that they integrate it and can carry on the chain[3]. Chazal say that one urges zerizus* upon those who naturally possess this quality. You will surely therefore redouble your ardor in your studies in the manner just described. You will seek out the gedulah* in the Talmud — namely, the call to action. And the assurance has been given us that one's efforts are crowned with success.
I took note with pleasure of your decision to begin again to learn chassidus. You know what the introduction to Sefer HaChinuch* says about the six constant mitzvos — those that apply at all times and in all places — namely, faith in the unity of Hashem, loving Him, and fearing Him. To put these mitzvos into practice, one must feel them physically, in one's heart, and not be content merely to speak about them, for that is not the way one expresses one's emunah*. Of course, all this can be brought into practice by learning chassidus.
You tell me that, when you teach Chumash*, the participants are not satisfied with the pshat* and that you have to comment on the pesukim* in a way that suits them. In fact, the commentators on the Chumash are particularly numerous and you will know how to find those that correspond to the expectations of your students. It would be good for you to obtain, from one of the chassidim of Montreal, a copy of HaKriah VeHaKedushah[4], in which several articles comment on the parshah* of the week and the haftarah*.
With blessing,
