B"H,

12 Iyar 5714,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

It is unnecessary to explain to you in detail what is clearly established by Chazal* — the immense importance of shalom*. For 'no kli holds berachah* like shalom.' It is solely in this way that one is in accord with the will of our holy rebbeim, may their merit protect us, for they gave of themselves for ahavas-Yisrael*. By centering one's conduct on the spirit of their teaching, one receives an increased berachah and success in what one undertakes.

Thus the other directors, the male and female teachers, will see that you, on your part, adopt a position of compromise and do not seek to impose your views, provided the project advances. For sometimes it is necessary, in order to obtain this result, to apply the principle 'when it is time to act for Hashem, one violates [a halachah of] the Torah'[1].

I have good hope that by acting in this way, peace and consequently the success of your activities will be strengthened in your city. Sometimes a compromise momentarily places one in a position of weakness in certain areas, but, as I have said, 'when it is time to act…'. This momentary interruption afterward brings the greatest reward.

Obviously, it is not possible to take a categorical stance on this matter, for conditions vary by place and by person. My remarks therefore have only general applicability. It is essential that those who take part in the same activity act of their own free will and not under constraint, or as if discharging an obligation in order to receive a salary.

One who is broad-minded will more easily abstain altogether from seeking any personal victory. One must also take into account that what one loses through a concession is sometimes amply compensated by what one gains.

Furthermore, it is particularly necessary, as I have already written several times, that all the chassidim* — and even their descendants, the male and female teachers — take part in the work being done. Often this does not appear as an absolute necessity, since no contribution results from it. Yet it is nevertheless good that this be so, especially when it is a matter of educating children[2], for the slightest element brought to a child can later take on considerable proportions.

When the work develops, you will surely find, at no distant date, the means to use their forces fully[3].

Awaiting your good news in this area, and thanking you for transmitting it to me as soon as possible,
