Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of Monday of Parshas Beshalach, with the request for berachah* enclosed therein, of which I gave reading at the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law the Rebbe, may his merit protect us.

You question me, for you have observed a drop in your business activity and you are looking for the reason. You have made a supposition and told yourself that it may be so because you accepted rabbinic functions when you were exiled, during the war.

First-order logic establishes that, since there exists an obvious reason 'revealed for us and our children,' there is no need to seek another, hidden one. In this case, you know the saying of Chazal* that 'a word committed to Hashem is like an action with men'[1]. Chazal also rule that 'withholding the money leads to lacking it'[2]. Consequently, in order to earn one's livelihood, it is necessary to give tzedakah*.

Now, you committed yourself, on behalf of your business, some time ago already, to dedicate the tenth of your gains — or even a little more — to tzedakah. For several months you postponed carrying out your decision. But HaKadosh-Baruch-Hu* is good and merciful. He therefore reminded you, by way of allusion, of your commitment and the merit incumbent on you. He emphasized to you that you have not yet brought the gift of your sincere heart.

All this fully explains the changes you observe in your business. It is therefore unnecessary to seek other reasons. You must fully fulfill your commitment and do so in a kindly manner. When you commit to doing the same in the future, Hashem will know that your resolution is sincere — that it is joyous, and not motivated by fear of punishment, chas veshalom*. I am sure that then your business will improve.

May Hashem bring it about that you and your brother take this decision as quickly as possible, with the simchah* that breaks limits and will enable you to obtain berachah and success.

I received the thirty-six shekels you sent as an installment, and they have been transmitted to the tzedakah fund.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מב' בשלח עם הפ"נ המוסגר בו שקראתיו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

והנה בנוגע לשאלתו שראה שינוי במצב העסק שלו ובמילא מחפש סיבת הדבר ועלו בידו רעיונות שאולי קשור זה במה שקבל משרת רבנות כשהלך בגולה בעת המלחמה.

והנה השכל הבריא אומר שכאשר יש סיבה גלוי' אין מההכרח לחפש גם סיבות נסתרות כיון שהנגלות לנו ולבנינו, ובנדון דידן הנה ידוע מרז"ל אמירתו לגבוה כמסירתו להדיוט וידוע ג"כ הפס"ד אשר מלח ממון חסר היינו שסגולה לפרנסה זהו ענין הצדקה וכיון שזה מזמן רב שקבל ע"ע בשם העסק להפריש מעשר ומעט יותר מזה לצדקה ועכב את הדבר משך כמה חדשים ומנהגו של הקב"ה ה"ה בחסד וברחמים, הרי רמז רמזו להם להזכירם את התחייבותם והזכות שיש להם שלא מלאו נדבת לבם הטהור עד עתה בפועל שזהו ביאור מספיק להשינוי בהעסק ובמילא אין לו לחפש ענינים אחרים כי אם לקיים את הבטחתם בשלימות והעיקר ברצון הטוב וכשתהי' החלטתם גמורה להתנהג ככה גם בעתיד והרי כלפי שמיא גליא אופן ההחלטה בזה ותהי' ג"כ מתוך שמחה ולא מיראת העונש ח"ו, מובטחני שתבוא ג"כ הטבה בהעסק והשי"ת יזכהו ואת אחיו שי' שיחליטו בזה בהקדם היותר אפשרי ומתוך שמחה ושמחה פורצת גדר להשפיע להם ברכה והצלחה...
