Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2455 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 8 · Letter 210 · To: grand Rav
B"H,
5 Adar Rishon 5714,
Brooklyn,
To the great rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
writer and author, Rav Avraham[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received your undated letter. Subsequently, I received your sefer* entitled 'Pesilim Meshulashim.' May Hashem grant you the merit and the success to magnify and adorn the Torah, to spread the light of chassidus*, its practices and its customs, in the widest circles.
You know the saying[2] of the Alter Rebbe — transmitted to us by my father-in-law the Rebbe, may his merit protect us — that chassidus does not concern a particular group within the Jewish people, but is, in every era, the affair of every individual.
Fortunate are those who have the merit to take part in the spreading of the wellsprings[3] outward.
With my blessing that you have long days and good years and that you achieve success in your sacred mission,
P.S. I enclose a check for your personal expenses.
I leafed through your sefer rapidly and here are my remarks:
In the introduction, p. 5, regarding the niggunim*: You will consult Kuntres Acharon of the Tanya at the section beginning 'Lehavin mah shekasuv beperi etz hadar,' on 'shirei David,' and in more detail Likkutei Torah Bamidbar from p. 18a.
Introduction of the first story, p. 10a, 'the secret of the mikvah which is': One can question this commentary, for this is not the 'secret of the mikvah' but rather the simple meaning of this assertion. Here is how this saying must be understood: one ascends from chol* to kodesh*, then from one kedushah* to another.
Thus the Kohen Gadol* on Yom Kippur* immersed five times in the mikvah*. It is for the same reason that one goes to the mikvah on Shabbos morning, even though one already immersed Friday afternoon.
Third story: You say that the Baal Shem Tov is reported to have relieved himself, then read a note, before saying the berachah* of Asher Yatzar[4] — precisely in order to find it.
Even if this story were transmitted by tradition and precise down to the smallest detail, one may question whether it was judicious to disseminate it, especially in Yiddish[5]. Chazal* underscore that a place of relieving oneself is contrary to the holiness which one must have in the encampment of Yisrael[6].
After relieving oneself, one must wash one's hands as quickly as possible. For an evil ruach* remains as long as one has not done so. I am therefore reasonably certain that this story — or at least some of its essential aspects — is not accurate.
The fact of prostrating oneself face to the ground[7] provides a proof of this. It is a tremendous descent, compared to death, yet necessary in order to elevate the forces of evil. Even so, one does it while wearing the talis* and tefillin*, in a place where there is a sefer Torah*.
Fifth story, p. 22: One must really wonder how this story can be compatible with halachah*.
Even if all the details are true and precise, one must once again ask the value of publishing such stories, which relate to the Baal Shem Tov and to chassidus. They cause clear harm, while one may wonder what they bring.
End of the nineteenth story, p. 73: The Magen Avraham, Orach Chaim, end of ch. 156, says: 'One who does not transmit a saying in the name of its author transgresses a prohibition.' From this it follows that the end of this story cannot be true.
I am surprised that you print such a statement about the Alter Rebbe, even though I do not doubt that your intention is good.
