To the members of the Shilo society,
may Hashem grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I learned with pleasure, through the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Duber Baumgarten, that you are organizing a great kiddush* this coming Shabbos Parshas Terumah, in order to mark the conclusion of the study of Mishnayos* Berachos*.
Hashem will grant you success. Just as you conclude the study of this masechta*, you will begin and complete that of other masechtos. You will pursue your study with breadth of mind, and there will be fulfilled in you the saying of Chazal*: 'One who exerts himself attains success.'
You know why the first masechta is Berachos, which itself begins with the laws of Shema Yisrael. For it is said that 'the beginning of wisdom is yiras Hashem,' which is precisely the content of this prayer. And the Mishnah says, at the beginning of the second perek of Berachos, that the first parshah of Shema expresses kabbalas ol malchus shamayim* and the second, kabbalas ol mitzvos*.
In this connection, a point may be specified. When this masechta sets forth the laws of Shema Yisrael, it speaks first of the evening Shema, which is recited at night. For one who begins to serve Hashem still finds himself in darkness — first because of the world in which he is, and especially because of his body, his nefesh-habahamis* and natural soul, which veil and darken the light of truth: that Hashem alone is true, that there is nothing other than Him, that all the beings of the heavens, of the earth and of all the intermediate stages live only by the truth of His existence. From this it can be concluded that He directs the entire earth, as the Rambam* specifies at the beginning of his Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah.
To begin one's avodas Hashem* in this way is to receive the yoke of Hashem, the yoke of Torah and of mitzvos, in the expression of the latter Rabbeinu Yeshayahu. Likewise, when Bnei Yisrael* received the Torah, they said: 'Naaseh venishma — we will do, and (afterward) we will understand.'
It is in this way that the Gemara* justifies the fact that the Mishnah deals first with the evening Shema, by reference to the creation of the world, where 'first there was darkness' — the veil over the divine vitality and light — 'then light,' through the effort of man who reveals the clarity of Hashem in the world.
It is the same in the life of each individual, since man is defined as a small world (olam katan), per Shabbos 77b and the chassidic* maamar* entitled 'Vehaeidos asher Hu'idosi,' in Sefer Hamaamarim 5700.
No one should say: 'I am in no hurry. I still have to think it over and consult others to determine whether I should begin or pursue this manner of serving Hashem. In any case, this concerns only me, and who could dictate my conduct to me?'
For each man and each woman is an integral part of the great world, and all are concerned by the directive of this week's parshah:
'And they shall make Me a Mikdash and I will dwell among them.' Chazal* specify: 'It is not said "in this Mikdash," but "among them" — that is, within every Yid.'
Each day one is required to say the morning davening. Then comes evening and night. Now, the tefillos* were instituted to replace the korbanos* of animals and the ketores*. These korbanos were performed in the physical Mikdash, and the tefillos that replace them must therefore be said in the spiritual Mikdash, that is, within the personality of every Yid.
In its simplest sense, the Mikdash is the place of holiness and of avodas Hashem*. It is therefore defined as a 'beis tefillah,' and it is said: 'Serve Hashem with awe' — this avodah being precisely a hint to davening. So too with avodas Hashem. It consists in knowing and making known that everything is, was, and will be by His word. Now, the foundation and the goal of all this is expressed by Shema Yisrael — yiras Hashem and the acceptance of the yoke of His malchus*. This is the purpose of the study of Torah and the practice of mitzvos.
The verse says: 'Hashem commanded us to perform all these chukim* in order to fear Hashem our Elokim*.'
And one can rely on Hashem, Who will fulfill the promise formulated at the end of that same verse:
'In order that good come to us all the days, and to keep us alive as on this day.' The commentators on the Torah specify: 'good for us — in this world and in the world to come.'
With my blessing for success in the study of Torah, in groups and individually, in the practice of mitzvos, in order to multiply 'the candle is a mitzvah and the Torah is light,' 'with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might,' in the thoughts, words and actions of every day,
