To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shlomo Chaim[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I enclose the reply I am making to this young man. From what I have learned, it is possible and desirable to spread chassidus* — and in particular knowledge of the Torah and the practice of mitzvos in general — among those who reside in Abyssinia[2], the place to which they are going.

This young man writes me that the costs of travel and lodging will be borne by the Chief Rabbinate[3]. It would therefore be well to find a second talmid*, in addition to this young man, who would also be capable of fulfilling the function of a shochet*. For if they are two, they will surely be able to act more effectively in spreading yiras-Shamayim* and chassidus.

מוסג"פ המענה שלי להאברך... וכיון שכפי שקבלתי ידיעה יש במדינת אביסיניע לשם נוסעים הם מקום ותקוה להפצת החסידות בפרט וידיעת התורה וקיום המצות בכלל בין תושבי המקום וכפי שכותב הנ"ל הנה הוצאות הנסיעה והאש"ל שם הוא ע"ח הרבנות הראשית, כדאי שימצא בין התלמידים עוד שני להנ"ל (ומובן שצ"ל מתאים ללימוד אומנות השו"ב גם כן) אשר בהיותם שניהם יחד שם בודאי יוכלו לפעול באופן המתאים בהנוגע ליראת שמים וחסידות ולבשו"ט אחכה.
