To the rav and tzaddik, distinguished chassid* descended from an illustrious family, of great lineage,

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 25 Shevat, which reached me on erev Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon, before I went to the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law the Rebbe, may his merit protect us. I therefore mentioned your name and all those you list to me, so as to obtain the satisfaction of everyone's needs. May Hashem bring it to pass that we may all announce good news to one another, always and every day.

You note that the wording of Bava Basra 115b regarding 24 Teves does not match that of Megillas Taanis ch. 5. This point was raised at the farbrengen* of 24 Teves 5712[2]. If I manage to procure the text, I will enclose it with the present letter.

You tell me that, in visiting the holy places, you mentioned my name, and I thank you for that. In our era everyone needs great rachamim*, particularly in this thick and deep darkness, when one suffers many obstacles and impediments of all kinds. May Hashem soon bring about the fulfillment of the statement of the Zohar* you cite in your letter:

'By means of this sefer*[3] they will go out from galus*.'

And may there also be realized the conclusion of this quote, which is a single word — and I am surprised that you do not cite it:

'B'rachamim — with mercy.'

I was glad to learn that you have adopted the daily study of Chumash* with the commentary of Rashi* and that of the Tehillim* instituted by my father-in-law the Rebbe. You are surely aware of his decision to study the Tanya* as well — a sefer that the Sages of Cracow qualified as 'the holy Tanya'[4] in their letter of approbation, even before its appearance. My father-in-law the Rebbe organized its division so that it could be learned in a year. Over these past weeks it has been printed in the United States for the first time, with the study guide of which my father-in-law the Rebbe is the author.

I asked the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Yehudah Shmotkin, to send you a copy of this Tanya. Kindly confirm to me its receipt.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מכ"ה שבט אשר נתקבל ער"ח אד"ר קודם נסיעתי להציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והזכרתיו ואת כל אלו שכותב אודותם להמצטרך לכאו"א והשי"ת יזכה את כאו"א מאתנו לבשר איש לרעהו טובות תכה"י...

מה שהעיר מב"ב קט"ו ע"ב ודלא כגירסת מגילת תענית פ"ה בהנוגע לכ"ד טבת, הנה נדבר אודות זה בהתועדות דכ"ד טבת ה'תשי"ב ואם אשיג השיחה מהתועדות הנ"ל אצרפה במכתבי זה.

ת"ח על מ"ש שבביקורו על המקומות הק' הזכירני לטוב אשר כאו"א זקוק להתעוררות ר"ר בזמננו זה ובפרט בהחשך כפול ומכופל ומניעות והעלמות שונים ומשונים ויה"ר ג"כ שיקוים בקרוב מאמר הזהר שמביא במכתבו בהאי ספרא יפקון מגלותא ויקוים ג"כ סיום מאמר זה (ולפלא שלא העתיקו במכתבו והוא התיבה) ברחמים .

נהניתי במ"ש שמחזיק בתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בהשיעור חומש עם פירוש רש"י ואמירת תהלים ובטח ידוע ג"כ מתקנתו שילמדו בכל יום שיעור בתניא (שנקרא עוד בהסכמת רבני קראקא תיכף להופעתו לאור בשם, תניא קדישא), וכפי שחלקו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בעצמו לימות השנה באופן שעכ"פ בשנה יסיימו אותו, וכיון שבשבועות האחרונות נדפס בפעם הראשונה בארצוה"ב ביחד עם מורה השיעור לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, הנה בקשתי את הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ מוה"ר יהודא שי' שמוטקין שישלח לכת"ר שי' טופס אחד ובטח יאשר קבלתו.
