To Professor Yechezkel Kutscher,
Greetings and blessings,
I took pleasure in making your acquaintance and in conversing with you about various matters of foremost importance, particularly concerning the youth of Yisrael. In keeping with my father-in-law the Rebbe's saying[1], a meeting between two Yidden* is not only a benefit for one and the other; there must in addition result a benefit for a third party as well. I have, therefore, good hope that our meeting will have a positive effect on your students and on those around you.
In the present case it concerns, more precisely, youth, and it is said that 'man is like the tree of the field.' The slightest modification effected on a young sapling — and a fortiori on a seed — will transform the tree that grows from it later, for the entire duration of its existence, in one direction or the other.
More than that, in the present era, destructive winds blow not only in the street but even in the schools and even in the yeshivos*. The responsibility — and consequently the merit — of those who are in a position to intervene in the matter, and whose voice is heeded by the youth, is increased to the same degree.
These pedagogues, who exert influence, must regard themselves as shluchim* of HaKadosh-Baruch-Hu*, in such-and-such a place and at such-and-such a time, to illuminate, refine, transform, and sanctify those around them through 'the candle is a mitzvah and the Torah is light,' and through the luminary of the Torah[2].
This luminary even has the power to bring back to good those who have strayed from the right path to the very last extreme, as Chazal* say at the beginning of Midrash Eichah Rabbah, in the second introduction. And nothing withstands the will.
With my respects and my blessing for success in the fulfillment of your sacred mission, with breadth of mind,
I thank you for having transmitted to me, so that I might familiarize myself with it, your article entitled 'The Linguistic Context of the Book of Yeshayahu*.' I return it to you with the present letter, as you requested.
In this connection, you explain at the end of that article the words that were changed in the Torah of Rabbi Meir[3], and you say it was a popular copy or one inspired by such[4].
In my view, one cannot put forward such an explanation, for Rabbi Meir was accepted as the head of the soferim* in his time[5]. Indeed, Chazal* relate in Megillah 18b that he wrote from memory and afterward transcribed what he had noted, with the greatest precision.
Thus, one of the changes appearing in the Torah of Rabbi Meir, according to Bereishis Rabbah ch. 9 §5, is the replacement of 'tov me'od' (very good) with 'tov maves' (death is good). It is clear that this had a deep meaning, a reasoned explanation. It was therefore not a popular copy. More than that, the Gedolei HaDor* praised his quality as a sofer*, as is attested in Eruvin 13a, Gittin 67a, and Koheles Rabbah ch. 2 §17.[6]
