B"H,

23 Shevat 5714,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter of 18 Shevat and I hasten to reply, for I am horrified by your conclusion: that owing to your state of health, "it is very possible that I shall resign in the coming days." I have good hope that this is only an eventuality, a hypothesis. Yet I deplore even this, for the mere fact of envisaging that this may be so affects the ardor one can have oneself, and likewise one's influence over those around one.

For someone like you, residing in the Holy Land, it is unnecessary to explain at length that whoever belongs to the Orthodox camp must not only fully assume his functions in public life but, much more, show the greatest zeal. For "the side of good is greater than[1]…" And if the opposing camp mobilizes all its forces, how much more so must it be for those who fear Hashem.

You speak of your state of health. Yet you know the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of Tanya* and of the Shulchan Aruch*, who described the value and importance of a Jewish body. The Rambam* rules at the beginning of the fourth chapter of his Hilchos Deos that "to have a body that is sound and in good health is among the ways of Hashem." Indeed, it is possible to perform one's work without putting one's health in question.

Quite the contrary, work is the channel and the vessel for strengthening health. First, logic establishes that this is so. Furthermore, our Torah confirms it regarding the inhabitants of Mechoza[2], in Bava Metzia 77a, and you will consult on this the commentary of the Rosh*.

In the spiritual dimension, it is plainly clear that an action whose purpose is to strengthen the tradition of Yisrael — especially when it calls for effort[3] on the part of the one who performs it — reveals the material blessing that is needed[4], as the seforim* of polish chassidus* explain, establishing a link between geshem (rain) and gashmiyus (material things).

With my respects, my blessing, and awaiting your good news,
