To the gemach* association "Shomrei Shabbos" and, at its head, to the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yochanan[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure the letter in which you mention your annual gathering[2], which will take place this coming Sunday, in the parshah of "If you lend money to My people"[3]. Chazal* explain in the Mechilta that this[4] is an obligation.

Likewise, I was pleased to take note of the number of loans you granted in the course of this year. You will surely increase it next year, like all that pertains to holiness — all the more so since the matter is, as we have just said, an obligation.

As you know, the loan possesses a special quality. It is granted to the poor as well as to the wealthy. May Hashem therefore grant that "the poor cease from the land"[5] and that these loans be granted only to the wealthy.

As a participation in this gemach* fund, I enclose a check, corresponding to a loan, with my blessing that there be fulfilled, in all the participants, the promise of Chazal* formulated by the Midrash Tanchuma, that "he who has compassion on the poor lends to Hashem." Thus, one is genuinely considered to be lending to Hashem Himself, and one will therefore receive His reward — in the manner of the Holy One, blessed be He — that is, multiplied many times, and precisely in a positive and joyful manner.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבם בו מודיעים מאסיפתם השנתית ביום א' הבע"ל פרשה אם כסף תלוה (ודרשו רז"ל במכילתא - חובה). כן נהניתי לקרות במכתבם על אודות מספר ההלואות שנעשו על ידם במשך שנה זו, ובודאי ככל דבר שבקדושה, וכנ"ל שהיא חובה, הרי יעלו בקדש להוסיף בזה בשנה הבע"ל. והרי ידועה המעלה בזה שהלואה הוא בין לעניים ובין לעשירים, ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיחדל אביון מקרב הארץ ויהי' רק האופן דהלואה לעשירים.

ובתור השתתפותי בהקרן גמ"ח שלהם מצורף בזה המחאה, הלואה להקרן גמ"ח שלהם, ובברכה אשר יקויים בכל המשתתפים בזה מרז"ל (תנחומא במקומו) מלוה ד' חונן דל כביכול כאילו מלוה להקב"ה (במילא) וגמולו ישלם לו, באופנו של הקב"ה שהוא כמה פעמים ככה ובאופן טוב ושמח דוקא.
