Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2414 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 8 · Letter 169 · To: début du tome 1
B"H,
17 Shevat 5714,
Brooklyn,
To my close relative, the great rav, chassid* and tzaddik*,
of an illustrious family, distinguished scion of the great,
Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh shlita*[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of this Wednesday. I have likewise received your two seforim*, the new Lev Aryeh, vols. 1 and 2. I thank you very much for this precious gift. As a mark of friendship and to thank you for it, I shall, at the end of the present letter, formulate some remarks, basing myself on the statement of Chazal* in Bava Metzia 84a: "When I would state a teaching, he would pose to me twenty-four questions… Did he not know that my explanation was correct[2]?"
In these last weeks, the Tanya* has been printed for the first time in the United States and, more generally, in the lower hemisphere[3]. In the haskamah of the rabbanim of Cracow[4], this sefer is called "the holy Tanya." I asked that it be sent to you, together with the kuntres[5] in which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, may his merit protect us, comments on the saying of the Alter Rebbe* that the Giving of the Torah did not take place in the lower hemisphere[6]. Surely those in your service will confirm to me that you have duly received it.
With my deference, my respects, and my blessing for my illustrious relative,
N.B.
A) At the beginning of vol.1, p.1, you ask why the verse sometimes says "the words of this Torah" and at other times "this sefer of the Torah." You know what Rashi* specifies on this. In the first case it refers to the Torah; in the second, to the sefer or its content.
Nevertheless, here too one may inquire: why is the verse sometimes phrased in the feminine[7] and at other times in the masculine[8]? You say it depends on how the Torah is studied. If one learns it as is fitting, lishmah*, that is, exercising influence oneself, the masculine form is chosen — as was the case in the time of Yehoshua. By contrast, if one does not study it as is fitting, if one merely receives, the feminine form is chosen — as was the case in the time of Moshe.
One may question such an interpretation, since the terms of the verse apply to the Torah, not to the one who studies it.
But, in my humble opinion, this analysis can be adopted, for the Torah must be studied lishmah* — that is, for the Torah itself, in its own interest — so that it receives from the one who studies it; just as in various Midrashim Yisrael is defined as the bridegroom and the Torah as the bride. Chassidus* explains this, in particular in Likkutei Torah Berachah p.94a and Shir HaShirim p.39c.
It is not so for study that is not lishmah*, in the realm of holiness, which is therefore self-interested, as Pesachim 68b specifies. You will also consult Sha'ar HaGilgulim, end of the fourth introduction. In such a case, it is the Torah that exercises influence, that is the bridegroom; Yisrael is then only the bride.
Bnei Yisrael in the wilderness were a "discerning generation" and consumed the manna[9]. They thus studied the Torah more easily lishmah*, not for the sake of reward. Then they entered Eretz Yisrael, and they had to undertake material activities — to plow, for example. For this they had to put into practice the words of the verse: "If you walk in My statutes."
The Sifra specifies the meaning of this verse: "Through laboring in Torah." Hence it was then conceivable to study even not lishmah*. That is why the verse referring to Yehoshua chooses the masculine — for it is then the Torah that grants its influence. For Moshe, by contrast, the verse uses the feminine, since the Torah receives.
B) At the beginning of the commentaries on the Talmud, vol.2, p.253, allusion is made to Chizkiyahu, who was punished for not concerning himself with having children. And his prayer was: "I have done what is good in Your eyes" — for he joined geulah[10] to tefillah.
One can explain the link between the two elements — his shortcoming and his prayer — according to chassidus* and Kabbalah, just as the link between "I have done what is good in Your eyes" and the joining of geulah to tefillah.
Geulah is bound to the sefirah of Yesod, and tefillah to that of Malchus. "What is good" likewise corresponds to Yesod, and "that which I have done in Your eyes" to Malchus. The proximity of geulah to tefillah, their unity, illustrate the higher unification, an extended prayer. Thus, in the prayer of the eighteen blessings recited afterward, particularly in Sim Shalom — "establish peace" — the middos of emotion unite with that of Malchus. From there, the request is granted materially.
Such was the concern of Chizkiyahu, who had children only spiritually and, in this way, was as if he had them materially. This is precisely the superiority of Torah over tefillah, as Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, Kuntres Acharon p.158a, explains.
Here is what the Tzemach Tzedek* says, in his Or HaTorah[11], at the end of the maamar* entitled "The angel who delivers me": "'I have done what is good in Your eyes': this means that he bound the positive aspect of Malchus, which is referred to as 'eye.'" This text also refers to Zohar vol.2 p.128b, the Mikdash Melech at the same reference, the Sha'arei Orah, second part, which diverges from the Zoharei Chamah at the beginning of Parshas Vayigash.
You will also consult the Siddur of the Arizal* and the Pri Etz Chaim, before the prayer of the eighteen blessings and Sim Shalom.
C) In the commentaries on the holy Zohar, p.292, you cite the Zohar on Parshas Yisro and on Parshas Kedoshim, vol.2 p.89a and vol.3 p.81a, which says: "Remember the day of Shabbos to keep it holy" and "You shall be holy." It remarks: "It does not say 'Be,' but 'you shall be,' for it is a certainty."
In fact, the following clarification can be brought regarding the difference between the kedushah of Shabbos and that of Yom Tov*. Shabbos is intrinsically holy and does not depend on the action of men, whereas conversely men sanctify the Yamim Tovim*.
Nevertheless, it is said in Shabbos 69b and in the Tur Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim ch.344 that one counts six days and observes Shabbos on the seventh[12]. The same is true for the kedushah of Yisrael, which is defined as a certain fact. For in the end it is said "none shall be cast off," and "it is impossible to exchange them for another nation."
But it does not say 'Be,' for one must first count six days, corresponding to the six millennia of creation, which are two millennia of desolation, two of Torah, and two of the messianic era. But at the end of these last two millennia, it is fitting to bring in Shabbos earlier — that is, the seventh millennium[13] — as the Ramban* explains in his commentary on the Torah, on the verse Bereishis 2:3. It is then that "you shall be holy."
D) You cite the Zohar on Parshas Behar p.108a, that "avadim are exempt from bearing the yoke of the heavenly kingdom." You surely know that the commentators on the Zohar discuss this and refer to the Sha'ar Chadash, Sefer HaIttur, hilchos Tefillin, that this verse comes to exempt a Jewish servant from wearing Tefillin*.
One also cites Kiddushin 22b, the Yerushalmi Kiddushin ch.1 end of §2, the Yerushalmi Berachos ch.3 §3, the Zecher Yehosef on Chagigah 4a, the Ikar Tiferes of the Radbaz on hilchos avadim ch.1 §1, and other texts as well.
E) At the end of the sefer, you explain Midrash Koheles Rabbah ch.8 §5, which comments on the verse: "He who keeps the mitzvah has a wise heart."
Now, the Yalkut Shimoni — and you will also consult Koheles Zuta — presents this Midrash with greater detail. Indeed, it is said that "the words of the Torah are poor in one place and rich in another." This text applies the terms of this verse to Aharon and Moshe, to Yehoshua and Moshe, or also to Esther and Mordechai.
Another explanation mentioned by this same text refers to Yosef, but it applies only to the beginning of the verse, whereas the previous ones commented on it in its entirety.
One may conclude — especially if one adopts the explanation that here it is Yehoshua and Moshe — that, according to these texts, the wise one of whom the verse speaks is superior to the one who keeps the mitzvah*.
One may explain, briefly, that Moshe and Aharon are "the king's escort" and "the queen's escort." Moshe and Yehoshua are "the face of the sun" and "the face of the moon" — the giving element and the receiving one. The same is true of Mordechai and Esther.
Obviously, the perception of evil has no negative effect Above. Below, on the other hand, when man "acquired knowledge of good and evil," he experienced sin and death, as Torah Or, by the author of Tanya*, explains at length in the maamar* entitled "And the serpent was cunning."
When Moshe, "the king's escort," knew that "I shall be sanctified through My honor"[14], he was not troubled, as the Yalkut Shimoni specifies. It was not so for "the queen's escort" and his sons. It therefore had to be concealed.
It was the same with Moshe and Yehoshua at the episode of the Eigel*, and with Mordechai and Esther at Haman's decree. This, moreover, is why Esther, on learning what was happening, received the status of a niddah, having had a flow of impure blood, over which the forces of evil exert their grip.
Consequently, one who shows determination is not troubled by bad news regarding the future. It is not so for women, who are emotional. Esther was kept apart from this knowledge, and the forces of evil thus exerted no grip — because she was then occupied with destroying the chametz[15], that is, with the disappearance of evil. As Chazal* say in Pesachim 11a: "When a man is searching for chametz to destroy it, can one imagine that he would come to consume it?"
May Hashem protect each one within all of Yisrael. And may He free us, that we may cease to be the servants of Achashverosh, that we may be holy with certainty, and that we may do what is good in His eyes — in a profound and integral manner.
