To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yitzchak Zalman[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your request for a blessing. May Hashem grant you success and may this small seed sprout great and wondrous saplings.
I use the word "small," but one must not interpret this term in the quantitative sense. For we can observe, even in this coarse world, that the qualitative outweighs the quantitative. This, moreover, is what the latest discoveries concerning the atom allow one to establish. For a small particle can destroy an entire region.
The attribute of good is stronger than that[2]. How much more, then, is the strength that the simplest man bears physically within him beyond all comparison — as the finite is to the infinite — with what is contained in a particle of ruchniyus*, and a fortiori of Elokus*, which every Jewish man and woman indeed possess.
Nevertheless, as in the example just given[3], a tremor is needed to reveal the hidden forces. The same is true for ruchniyus* and even for Elokus*, concealed in the world so that one may seek them.
You know the interpretation of the verse: "A wise son makes his father rejoice." This indicates that the father conceals himself so that his son may seek him. And, as you know, it is told of one of the great ones of our people that he saw his grandson playing hide-and-seek with a child his own age. When his grandson hid and the other child went off to another activity, the grandson began to cry. When asked why, he said that he had hidden and no one was seeking him. Obviously, the same is true for the matter at hand.
In the present generation, the responsibility of each one in this matter is even more clearly engaged. For one no longer needs to seek. It suffices to disseminate what exists. From this, one perceives Divinity with one's senses. How much more so when one is a disciple of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, adopting his practices in one's daily existence — in one's thoughts, one's words, and one's concrete actions.
I await good news of your positive activities — not only those that might be expected even from persons foreign to chassidus*, but those which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, hopes for from each of his disciples.
