To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Dovid Nosson[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received in due course your letter announcing good news, and I renew my blessing on the occasion of the birth of your great-grandson — that is, the son of the son of your son, Rav Moshe Shimshon. May his parents derive much chassidic* nachas* from him. You yourself and your wife will likewise derive from them and from all your children great nachas* and pleasure, for long days and good years.

You ask me for the reference to the Rambam's responsum[2] regarding the holiness of ksav Ashuris*[3]. It is printed in various places, particularly in the Shulsinger brothers' edition of the Rambam* published in the United States.

As for the question itself of teaching ksav Ashuris* to children, you refer to what the Shulchan Aruch* says in the laws of Talmud Torah*. Nevertheless, if it referred to such a practice, it would have spread in the Jewish communities. But it has never been heard that such is the case.

I enclose the chassidic* maamar* delivered last year on the day of the hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, may his merit protect us[4]. You will surely take a generous attitude and place it at the disposal of the largest possible number.

בעתו קבלתי מכתבו בבשו"ט, והנני בזה לכפול ברכתי להולדת נכדו, הבן של בנו מוה"ר משה שמשון שי' אשר ההורים שיחיו יקבלו ממנו רוב נחת חסידותי וכת"ר וזוגתו שיחיו ירוו ממנו ומכל יו"ח שיחיו רוב נחת וענג לארך ימים ושנים טובות.

במה ששואל למקום תשובת הרמב"ם אודות קדושת כתב אשורי הנה נדפס הוא בכ"מ ומהם גם בהוצאת הרמב"ם שנדפס בארצוה"ב ע"י האחים שולזינגער. ובגוף הענין של לימוד צורת האותיות של כתב אשורי לתינוקות, הנה אחרי כל הראי' משו"ע הל' ת"ת וכו' הנה אם הי' הכוונה במקומות אלו ללמוד כתב אשורי בטח היו נוהגים כזה בתפוצות ישראל ומעולם לא נשמע דבר כזה.

מוסג"פ המאמר שנאמר אשתקד ביום ההילולא של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ובטח ינהג בו טוב עין לזכות בו את הרבים.
