Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2393 — Tzedakah
Volume 8 · Letter 148
B"H,
6 Shevat 5714,
Brooklyn, New York,
To my close relative, the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
who possesses great understanding, abounds in good deeds and in scientific knowledge,
of illustrious lineage, Rav Gad[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I have heard much about you and your activities in general, about your interest in the life of the chassidim* in the Holy Land and the part you take in it in particular. Furthermore, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, may his merit protect us, spoke to me about you. And I have just received your letter of 10 Teves, which gave me great pleasure.
I hope this is the beginning of a correspondence to be exchanged between us, and that increased activity for each of us will result from it. You know the saying[2] of the Mitteler Rebbe* that when two Jews come into contact, they ally two nefesh-Elokis* against a single animal soul.
I took particular pleasure in reading at the end of your letter that you are preparing to publish your memoirs, part of which will deal with the Jewish settlement[3] at the end of the Turkish period and another part with the time when you served as a judge during the thirty years of the British Mandate. You also describe your meeting with my father-in-law, the Rebbe.
A few days after your letter, I also received those chapters, including the one describing the visit[4] to the Cave of Machpelah[5]. I read all of this with interest, and I observed with satisfaction the warm sentiments expressed in this text and also between its lines, when you evoke the past, particularly life in Yerushalayim*, the conduct of the chassidim* in general, especially during the Yamim Tovim* and important dates.
If it is good to disseminate such accounts at all times and in all places, how much more so is this the case at the present time and in our Holy Land, which will be rebuilt and restored by our righteous Moshiach*. Unfortunately, many young people call into question our luminous past. Some are not even aware of it, and they would have history begin in the contemporary period, or just a few years ago. Such a conception leads to fallacious conclusions. You are on the spot, and so it is unnecessary to elaborate.
May Hashem grant that, through your memoirs and, more generally, through your actions, you may implant in all who constitute our people the love of the Tradition inherited from our fathers, of all the values that were sacred to them and for which they gave themselves with mesirus nefesh*. Thus it will be clearly established that our Tradition and our values are eternal, for the entire Jewish people, that they enable it to endure throughout the time of the galus*, until we merit the true and complete Geulah*.
With my respects and my blessing for long days and good years, filled with fruitful good deeds,
From your close relative,
You do not specify whether I should return the text of your memoirs to you. I shall therefore keep it until you indicate what should be done with it.
I would like to know whether you have knowledge of details that marked the visit of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to the Cave of Machpelah[5], particularly the place to which he was able to enter[6]. I thank you in advance.
