To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yissachar Dov [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I am surprised not to have received news of your communal preoccupations since your letter of Tuesday of Parshas Lech Lecha. Now, in that letter, you promised me to give me some. This is no doubt the sign that all is well. Nevertheless, you know the decision of our Sages, expressed at the beginning of Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh Deah, according to which one cannot content oneself with a presumption whenever a verification is possible.

Your question concerning the appropriateness of teaching Tanya* to the older students has been transmitted to me. You know that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, asked that this be the case when he was in Riga, where there were a few daughters of chassidim*. Rav Mordechai Shefetz therefore delivered this teaching to them. There is also a letter [2] from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, encouraging this matter.

Nevertheless, they are not obliged to study it in order. One must therefore begin with the easiest passages and those most directly applicable to avodas* Hashem. Indeed, the Shulchan Aruch* also says that a woman is required to study these parts of the Torah*, since she is bound to observe the prohibitions and to practice the positive commandments which are not time-bound. This includes the six perpetual mitzvos*: emunah* in Hashem, the rejection of another deity, belief in His unity, the necessity of loving Him, of fearing Him, and of not being led astray by the thought of one's heart and the sight of one's eyes.

The introduction of the Sefer HaChinuch mentions these mitzvos*. The means of putting them into practice is to study the concepts defined by chassidus*.

N.B.: I enclose a copy of my letter [3], addressed to all, on the occasion of the luminous day of the chag hageulah* and the deliverance of our soul, the recent 19 Kislev. Its content is valid all year, and it can be transmitted to the older students with the necessary explanations.

לפלא שמעת קבלת מכתבו מג' לך, לא הגיע ממנו ידיעות בענינים הכללים כפי שהבטיח במכתבו הנ"ל, ובטח זהו סימן שהכל בסדר ובכ"ז ידוע פסק רז"ל (שו"ע יו"ד בתחלתו) שאין מעמידין על החזקה במקום שיש לברר...

נמסרה לי שאלתו אם ללמוד תניא עם התלמידות הקשישות. והנה ידוע שנעשה כזה ע"פ הוראת כ"ק מו"ר אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בהיותו בריגא עם אחדות מבנות אנ"ש ולמד עמהם הרה"ח כו' מרדכי חפץ הי"ד וישנ[ו] ג"כ מכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר המעודד ומחזק אותו בזה, אבל מובן ג"כ שהלימוד עמהם אין צריך להיות דוקא על הסדר, ויש להתחיל בהמקומות הקלים יותר און מער עבודה'דיקע אשר אז גם ע"פ שו"ע מחוייבת אשה ללמוד חלק זה דתורה כיון שמחוייבת בכל הל"ת וכל המ"ע שאין הזמן גרמא ובמילא גם שש המצות התמידיות שהם אמונת ה' שלא להאמין לזולתו ליחדו לאהבה וליראה אותו שלא לתור אחר מחשבת הלב וראיית הענינים וכמו שנמנו בהקדמת ספר החינוך אשר לכל זה באים ע"י ידיעת הענינים המבוארים בדא"ח.
