To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Meir [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received with shock your letter of this Tuesday, in which you envisage the possibility of fasting on Shabbos* for a yarzeit*. Various opinions exist on this matter, but all agree that one does not fast [2].

In my view, it is preferable to advance it [3] to Friday, or, if that is not possible, to delay it to Sunday, or else not to fast at all.

You will consult the opinions stated on this subject in the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim ch. 568 §9 and in the writings of the later poskim*: the Turei Zahav ch. 429 §3, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* ch. 429 §9, the references cited by the Sdei Chemed, klalim, under "aveilus*" §96, and the Kol Bo of Rav Greenwald, p. 390.

In my opinion, it is not even necessary in this case to undertake hataras nedarim*. In any case, one should not fast on Shabbos*.

נבהלתי בקבלת מכתבו מיום ג' שקס"ד להתענות בשבת, תענית יארצייט, ויש בזה כמה דיעות, ולכ"ע אין מתענין, ולדעתי מוטב להקדים ליום ו' ואם אי אפשר מאחרין ליום א' או שאין מתענים כלל. ויעוין הדיעות בזה בשו"ע או"ח תקס"ח סעיף ט', ובאחרונים שם טורי זהב סי' תכ"ט ס"ק ג' ובשו"ע רבינו שם סעיף ט' ובספרים שהובאו בשדי חמד אסיפת דינים מערכת אבלות ס"ק צ"ו, ובספר כל בו להרב גרינוואלד עמוד ש"צ, ולדעתי אפילו התרת נדר אין שייך בזה. ובכל אופן לא להתענות בש"ק.
