To the members of the synagogue "Anshei Lyadi,"

of Arizal* nusach, in Brooklyn, New York, and at their head,

the president, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Eliyahu Moshe Chalit, the shochet*,

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to have news from you, although it was very brief. I hope that not only the tefillos*, but also the public study sessions, are being maintained. For in the present era, a shul* must also be a beis midrash*. The Gemara* qualifies it as a "mikdash me'at*." Now, the light of the Beis HaMikdash* illuminated the entire world. Likewise, a shul* and beis midrash* must be the central point from which Jewish practice spreads, with the warmth and self-sacrifice that befit it, to the entire surroundings.

As the present period demands, one cannot wait for others to come to shul* on their own initiative in order to give them a Siddur*, a Tehillim*, or another sefer*. One must find a way to contact them at their homes and to encourage them to come to daven, to study Torah*, in shul*. There they must be able to receive, in an enhanced manner, "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is light," as well as the luminary of the Torah*, that is, the teaching of chassidus*.

Our holy masters, from Liozna [1], Liadi [2], Lubavitch [3], gave their lives for this. It was the same in all the places where they later settled, until my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, settled in Brooklyn, New York. And we have all received the assurance [4] of the Alter Rebbe*, whose chag hageulah* [5] we recently celebrated and whose hilula*, on 24 Teves, was yesterday, that appropriate action in this matter will indeed enable us to obtain success.

In addressing my blessing to all the members of the community and their families, each one according to his specific needs, material and spiritual,

שמחתי לקבל פ״ש מכם ,ולמרות שללא כל פרטים ,עם־כל-זה הנני

מקוה שנשמרים לא רק סדרי התפילה אלא גם סדרי הלימוד ברבים,

שבזמננו הנוכחי ,צריך בית הכנסת להיות גם בית המדרש ,ולפי הגמרא

בית הכנסת נקרא מקדש מעט -כשם שמבית המקדש יצאה הרי אורה

לכל העולם ,כך גם בית הכנסת ובית המדרש צריך להיות נקודת מרכז

ממנה תופץ יהדות בחמימות הראוי׳ ומסירת נפש בכל הסביבה.

ולפי תביעת הזמן הנוכחי ,אסור להמתין עד שהלה יבוא לבית

הכנסת ואז לתת לו סידור או תהלים או ספר אחר ,אלא צריך לחפש

דרכים איך להכנס לביתו ,ולגרום לו לרצות לבוא לבית הכנסת להתפלל,

ולבוא ללמוד ,ומבית הכנסת יקח אתו תוספת בנר מצוה ותורה אור

ומאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות.

שכן נשיאינו הק׳ מסרו נפשם על זה עוד מאז ליאזנא ,ליאדי

ליובאוויטש ובמקומות האחרים ,עד חמי כ״ק אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה

נבג״מ זי״ע ,בברוקלין נ.י .ולכולנו יש הבטחה מכ״ק אדמו״ר הזקן,

שאת חג הגאולה שלו חגגנו לא מכבר ,ואשר יום ההילולא שלו כ״ד טבת

הי׳ אמש ,שכאשר יעשו ,ודאי יצליחו.

בברכה לכל המתפללים וב״ב שיחיו כל אחד ואחת להמצטרך לו

בגשמיות וברוחניות.
