To the great rav, distinguished and pleasant chassid* who

fears Hashem, has good conduct, devotes himself

to communal needs, is full of zeal, multiplies positive

accomplishments, possesses great qualities, is from

an illustrious family,

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to learn that you have just turned sixty, for long days and good years. No doubt you have organized "a yom tov for the Sages," in accordance with the expression of the Sages themselves. I therefore take part myself, although I am at a distance.

As you know, and you will consult on this subject the Midrash Shmuel, the early Sages report several versions of the Mishnah at the end of the fifth chapter of Pirkei Avos*: "At sixty, one accedes to old age," "At sixty, one accedes to understanding," "At sixty, one accedes to wisdom."

The writings of the Arizal*, namely the Meorei Or at the end of chapter 7, say that "At fifty, one accedes to old age. At sixty, one accedes to advanced age." This statement is based on the Tikkunei Zohar, Tikkun 21, 57, 71, and on the Sha'ar HaMitzvos, Parshas Kedoshim.

May Hashem grant that all this be fulfilled in you and revealed in the best way, as the Likkutei Torah of the Alter Rebbe*, Shir HaShirim 11a, explains.

May Hashem grant that you can use your capacities and know success in this domain, for yourself and in the heritage your fathers bequeathed to you, in order to grow and adorn the Torah*, for "great is study" and "great is action" [3], in the spirit of the Jewish tradition and with the illumination of chassidus*.

בנועם נודעתי כי הגיע לגיל ששים, לאורך ימים ושנים טובות, ובודאי כמרז"ל עביד יומא טבא לרבנן, ומשתתף הנני בזה, אף כי בריחוק מקום.

ידוע המובא בראשונים (ראה מד"ש שם) כמה גרסאות במשנה סוף פ' ה' דאבות, בן ששים לזקנה, בן ששים לבינה, בן ששים לבינה, בן ששים לחכמה, ובכתבי האריז"ל (בן חמשים לזקנה) בן ששים לשיבה (מאורי אור, סוף אות ז' והוא עפ"י מש"כ בתיקוני זוהר, תקון כא', נז, עא', ובשער המצות פ' קדושים). ויהי רצון שכולהו יתנהו בי' ויהיו הענינים בהידור, ועפ"י המבואר בלקו"ת לרבנו הזקן, שיר השירים, דף יא' סע"א ושם.

והשי"ת יזכהו ויצליחהו להשתמש בכשרונותיו, הן של עצמו הן של מורשת אבות, להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה, בגדול התלמוד וגדול המעשה, ברוח ישראל סבא, ועל פי מאור תורת החסידות.
