Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I learned with sorrow of the passing of your father, the distinguished chassid* who feared Hashem, may he rest in peace. May his neshamah* be bound up in the bond of life.

May Hashem comfort you among the mourners of Tziyon* and Yerushalayim*.

May you, in the future, no longer know pain and sorrow, chas veshalom*. You will receive only good, always and every day.

Your father was attached to the Lubavitch movement and prayed with a Siddur* according to the Arizal* nusach. Now, the greatest pleasure a departed one can experience is to observe the continuity of what he accomplished, particularly through his son, who is "the thigh of his father."

It would therefore be good for you to adopt these practices, to the fullest extent possible. Your Siddur* will therefore be that of the Arizal*, and moreover, you will undertake actions which will cause nachas* to the departed. Thus our Sages teach: "When his offspring is alive, he himself is still alive." This causes the funeral eulogies, the funeral preparations [1], and the burial to disappear, as the tractate Taanis 5b states.

With my blessing,

N.B.: You are surely familiar with the responsa concerning the change of nusach in tefillah*. Under certain conditions, one may indeed adopt the Arizal* nusach. Conversely, it is more difficult to abandon the latter for another nusach.

One can cite on this subject the responsa of the Rashdam, Orach Chaim ch. 35; Divrei Chaim vol. 2 ch. 8, which explains what is said in the responsa of the Chasam Sofer, Orach Chaim chs. 15 and 16; the responsa Beis Hayotzer ch. 8, which comment on the Divrei Chaim by responding to questions of the Maharam Shik, Orach Chaim ch. 43; the responsa Minchas Elazar vol. 1 ch. 11; the Shirei Minchah vol. 2 ch. 3; and the Pri HaSadeh vol. 2.

Notes

[1] Literally, the embalming. This teaching of our Sages concerns Yosef, who was embalmed in Mitzrayim*.
