Brooklyn,

To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav David [1],

Greetings and blessings,

A) I will mention the name of the one whom you cite when I am at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, that he may have a speedy recovery. On that occasion, you should try to determine whether his birth was pure [2].

To understand the value of this, the following comparison may be offered. When one comes to consult a lawyer or a doctor, one must describe the situation as it is. If one fails to do so, one harms the person posing the question and acts against reason. The same applies to the matter at hand [3].

Moreover, you will explain to the parents of this child that my intention in posing this question is by no means to awaken Divine severity, chas veshalom*. In fact, the treatment must be adapted to the situation and to the reasons that are at the root of what is currently happening.

In fact, medicine establishes that the competent practitioner is the one who heals not only the symptoms but also the causes. By weakening only the effects, one obtains only ephemeral relief, since the reasons for the affliction remain as before. It is unnecessary to say more.

B) I was particularly pleased to learn that when you meet Yidden*, you remind them of their origins. And I was even happier that you had occasion to observe how much your words have effect.

Not all merit to observe, immediately or even quickly, the fruit of their efforts. This shows clearly that not only your intention but also your actions are accepted. Hashem therefore helps you and adds strength to you, so as to multiply your actions.

C) Last point, which arouses the most interest: I see that you have just turned sixty, that your birthday was celebrated, that your colleagues recognize your worth and your accomplishments. May Hashem therefore grant that you continue, for many years, to draw close the hearts of the children of Yisrael* to our Father Who is in heaven. You will do so in good health and with broad-mindedness.

With my blessing for long days and good years which, according to the saying [4] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, will be good in all the meanings of the term.

I enclose for you a copy of the chassidic maamar* [5] and of my letter addressed to all [6] on the occasion of the chag hageulah* of Yud-Tes Kislev*. Its content is current throughout the year. It will surely interest you and be useful to you in your work.

I was pleased to see that you are publishing collections of sayings of our Sages. No doubt you will also add to them the appropriate collections for spiritual health, that of the soul. The Eight Chapters of the Rambam* emphasize how comparable it is to physical health. Most recently, doctors themselves attach ever greater importance to the sciences of the spirit and its properties, in order to attain physical health.

Here are references and a collection of sayings of our Sages relating to medicine, which appear in the Talmud*. I recall having seen, several years ago, a specific collection on this subject, whose author was named Heilpern. Likewise, the work entitled "The Talmud and the Sciences of the World," by Rav Kamelhor, will surely interest you. This last work deals with all the sciences at once. The two authors were, it seems, people who feared Hashem.
