To the young Chaim [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to learn that you will be fifteen years old on 18 Teves. May Hashem grant that after fifteen years — the age at which one accedes to the study of the Gemara* — you grow in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of chassidus*.

Our Sages note that the word "Gemara" is composed of the initials of the four angels of the supernal Chariot — Gavriel, Refael, Michael, and Uriel. Thus you will become imbued with the purpose of avodas* Hashem, that of being a chariot for Him [2], as the Tanya* explains.

You surely observe the practices specific to the birthday [3]: aliyah* to the Torah*, giving tzedakah* before Shacharis* and before Minchah*, additional study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of chassidus*. May Hashem grant you success.
