Igrot Kodesh · Letter 233 — Astronomy, Calendar Science & Torah Scholarship

Volume 2 · Letter 66

By the grace of Hashem*, Friday 22 Sivan* 5706, Brooklyn. To the great Rav*, Chassid* and scholar, who fears Hashem, Rav D. Shapiro[1], I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter.
I have duly received your book, volume 1 of the responsa* Bnei Tzion* and I thank you for having sent it to me. I skimmed through it quickly and found all the more pleasure in this reading as I expected to see astronomical questions addressed. I have noted several remarks which you will find below. I hope you will be grateful to me for presenting them, and that you will do likewise if you observe something worth clarifying in my own works.
A) On page 7b, you write that luminous intensity is proportional to surface area. I do not understand why this law applies here, that is to say, to the sunlight which we receive. It seems to me that if the radius of the sun were twice as large, each portion of the solar surface would send the same light to the earth. Thus, if the surface of the sun were four times larger, we would receive four times more light. But if the surface were seven times larger and therefore two and a half times greater in radius, we would receive seven times more light. Thus, if the radius of the sun were a million times larger and its surface were a million squared times larger, the light it would send to earth would be a million squared times greater and not a million times greater.
Certainly, the intensity of light depends solely on the illuminated surface and not on its thickness or its quantity. But it can also be otherwise. Thus, a piece of metal glows when heated to red. Its heat depends, obviously, on its size and not on its surface. Moreover, for the present, we do not know how the sun shines, according to tractate Shabbat* 39a, the Yerushalmi* Rosh Hashanah* 2, 4, and the Rambam*, in his laws of the Foundations of the Torah* 2, 3.
B) On page 28c, you briefly and hastily comment on an explanation of our Sages*. According to the astronomers, on whose knowledge you rely to write this paragraph, you say that if the distance between the sun and the earth were reduced seven times, the time of the solar revolution would be decreased approximately eighteen and a half times, but not forty-nine times as you write, for the duration of this revolution does not depend solely on the force of gravity and is not modified by distance.
You cite in your book the Mehalech HaKochavim*, a book which I have not seen, but which surely develops the same analysis. And the Midrash Rabbah*, previously cited, should indeed have reported all of this, since not everyone knows it. You will consult in this regard the Rambam*, laws of oaths, at the end of the fifth chapter. In fact, this law has been known for only three hundred years.
I would formulate another remark on this same paragraph. According to the beginning of your discussion and the proofs you cite, one can understand that the sun would, in your view, rotate three hundred and forty-three times faster, and furthermore, the path it travels would be reduced seven times. Yet the purpose of your book is to demonstrate solely that its revolution is reduced three hundred and forty-three times.
C) On page 31d, you comment, according to your conception, on the Baraita* of Shmuel*, stated at the beginning of the sixth chapter, at the previously cited reference. You say that: 'the sun was created under the constellation of Leo*, at fifteen degrees and the moon under the constellation of Cancer*, at fifteen degrees.'
According to you, the Baraita* states that the moon appeared at twenty days and four hundred and eight degrees[3], while the motion of the luminaries began at fifteen days. In the intervening time, the luminaries traveled a distance for which they currently require approximately seventy-seven days. During seven days the moon was diminished, and seventy days therefore remain.
This interpretation seems correct, for if one admits that at twenty days and four hundred and eight degrees, the sun was at twenty-three degrees in the constellation of Libra*, it must have been, at fifteen days, in the constellation of Leo*, at fifteen degrees. Here, however, are the difficulties this assertion raises:
1. The diminishment was pronounced after the accusation of the moon[4], which occurred at twenty days and four hundred and eight degrees, according to the Targum* of Yonatan ben Uziel*, that is, after the luminaries had already traveled a distance equivalent to seventy-seven days of revolution. If this is the case, why do our Sages* say 'seventy' and not 'seventy-seven'?
2. You calculate that in this interval, the luminaries traveled a distance for which they currently require approximately seventy-seven days. Yet if one adopts the standard value of this calendrical count[3], this distance is indeed approximately seventy-two days, of which seven are 'swallowed' according to the expression of the Talmud*. But there are then sixty-five days, and not seventy, that elapse.
3. Your calculation incorporates four multiplications by the same number, which is hardly customary in Gemara* texts.
Now, with a few modifications, it is possible to resolve these difficulties. To do so, here first is the exact value of the counts of the Midrash Rabbah* cited at the beginning of your analysis[5]. The explanation that can be deduced from it is as follows. The difference between the solar and lunar cycles determines the foundations of our calendar. Three values can be used for this purpose: the daily cycle of the moon 13° 10' 35", that of the sun 59' 8", and the difference between the two, 12° 11' 27". Of course, in practice, these three data points suffice, and certain Sages* cite them. Others, however, use the corresponding time intervals (and not angles), and in this case as well, three values: 29 days 12 hours 793 degrees*, 365 days 6 hours, and 29 days 12 hours 793 degrees minus 365 days 6 hours divided by 12. At standard precision, one thus obtains 2 days 5 hours 204 degrees*. Our Sages* use these data to formulate their opinions.
This value of 2 days 5 hours 204 degrees* is, of course, the difference between the lunar month and the twelfth part of the solar year and constitutes the key to our calendar since antiquity.
This fundamental value has a direct significance in the Midrash*, which you mentioned: at creation, the moon and sun were at the same position, at zero degrees. The moon began to gain upon the sun. After 2 days 5 hours 204 degrees*, the moon had advanced 30° ahead of the sun, that is to say, the new moon had appeared for the first time[12]. This moment serves as the reference point for the calendrical count.
Your Baraita* therefore presents the various systems of calendrical counting that are current among our Sages*. The five counts which I have briefly mentioned are, in essence, different ways of expressing the interval between the first new moon of creation and the next, that is, 2 days 5 hours 204 degrees*.
[...]
The Midrash Shemot Rabbah* 30, 12 reports the statement of Aquilas* to Hadrian*, proclaiming the quality of Israel*, according to which the humblest Jew knows how much time has elapsed since the creation of the world, despite the various opinions expressed concerning the counting of years. You inquire about this in your book, and one can therefore give the following explanation.
The nations of the world do not have access to this knowledge, or possess only rudiments thereof, which nonetheless vary from one extreme to the other, as is still the case at the present time. In contrast, the humblest Jew possesses in this domain precise knowledge and not merely rudiments. And although a doubt remains regarding two or three years, this is in no way comparable to the imprecision that exists among other nations.
One may consider that four times are to be retained for counting the new moons and the years, as you indicate in your book. What will be developed further will moreover allow for the definition of a fifth time. These are, in order: twenty days and four hundred and eight degrees[6], two days five hours and two hundred and four degrees[7], six days and fourteen hours, three days and twenty-two hours, eight hundred and seventy-six hours[8].
It is clear that we cannot reconcile all the opinions developed by the Sages* of the later generations. In contrast, if we consider the explanations given by the Sages* of the earlier generations, we can explain the differences that exist between them by recalling that the counting of years can begin from four dates: from Rosh Hashanah*[9], when Adam*, the first man, was created; from the preceding year, when the world was created[10]; from the day when the new moon was created[11]; and from the first new moon after the creation of the world[7]. [...]
I have learned that you are one of the descendants of the Rav* and Chassid*, Rabbi Baruch Mordechai* of Babruysk*. Some say that his family name was Atigna and others, Atigner. Do you have more precise information on this matter?
You have undoubtedly seen the Kuntras Bikur Chicago*, a collection of discourses by my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*. His biography is recalled in the second discourse. Does your family have additional information on this subject, such as the date of his birth and that of his death? Similarly, do you possess manuscripts of the Rambam* and commentaries of which he is the author?

* * *

* * *
