Igrot Kodesh · Letter 232 — Unauthorized Reprinting · Bittul & Avodas Hashem

Volume 2 · Letter 65

By the grace of Hashem, 17 Sivan* 5706, To the young men, great Rabbanim* and Chassidim* who fear Hashem, the students of the Yeshiva*, in Shanghai[1], I greet and bless you,
I reply to the details that were transmitted to me by Rav Gorfinkel:
A) I already wrote to you, on the order of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, that you must not republish any publication distributed by any of the institutions he directs without first obtaining his explicit authorization[2]. It does not matter in which language it is published. Yet you have just published the Conversations with the Young and the Shnei Luchot HaBrit*.
We do not know how to qualify such an attitude. You will no doubt tell us how it should be interpreted and we will deduce from it what must be transmitted to my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. You may also write to him directly.
B) The two hundred[3] have been transmitted to Rav Gorfinkel. The remainder of the amount owed for the Siddur*[4] will be transmitted to him in four weeks, as you requested. For the time being, you shall send here, to Kehot* publications, only two copies of this Siddur. You shall keep the rest and you may sell them, at a unit price that will not be less than two and a half American dollars. Subsequently, we will tell you where to send these Siddurim*.
C) On the other hand, you shall send here the Derech Mitzvotecha*[5] and the Sha'ar HaKollel*[6]. If these books are not yet bound, send them to us unbound. Here, we will have the title page redone and will perhaps add some supplements.
In the future, if you do not have the time to wait for the title page and supplements, send us the books unbound.
D) We have sent you the Torah Or* and the Perush HaMilot* of the Admor HaEmtzai*, which you have surely begun printing. I ask you once more to let me know which books and printings you possess in good condition, from the list that was attached to my first letter, so that we will not have to search for them here. I wish, in particular, to have the edition of Torah Or* published in Jitomir*, in 5622[7].
E) Articles for "the young Jew"[8] have been sent to you, as you requested. We will also send you what will be published in English in the future. It would be good for all the Talmud Torah* students to become subscribers to "Conversations with the Young", in Yiddish* and in English. Their price will be deducted from what you print on site.
F) If there are Jews, in particular young people, who understand only the language of the country, Chinese, it would be good to translate, in an elegant and faithful manner, our most important publications, according to their spiritual needs, for example the brochures on Shabbat*, Tefillin*, Torah* and Israel*, the library of festivals, the proverbs appearing in the daily collection published in English and perhaps even a part of the talks and the biography of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. Please let me know your opinion on this matter immediately.
Commenting on the verse "and Aharon* did thus", which appears in the Parasha* of the week[9], our Sages say, and Rashi* cites it in his commentary on the Torah, that the praise of Aharon is thereby proclaimed, who made no modification whatsoever to the divine Injunction[10]. The Likkutei Torah* of the Ari Zal* asks why it is precisely here that this fact is emphasized. In fact, it seems that there was indeed a modification here.
Hashem had said to Moshe*: "The seven lights shall illuminate toward the Menorah*" from the very beginning of their lighting. And it is related that "Aharon raised the flame of the lights toward the Menorah", when this flame was already burning. The Torah therefore establishes that Aharon introduced no modification and was indeed, from the very beginning of the lighting, "toward the Menorah". It further specifies that he was still there when the flame had already risen. This detail is, of course, entirely to his praise. This is what the Ari Zal explains.
Chassidut* provides, in this regard, the following explanation. The summit of the service of Hashem is the love one feels for Him, and the Kohen* is precisely a man of kindness and love. Now, at the beginning of this service, it is still easy to find oneself "toward the Menorah", to perceive the deep dimension of the Mitzvot*. When the flame rises, however, one feels an immense attraction to the Divine and discovers different ways of expressing it. One can then err and act wrongly, confusing one's own idea with the meaning of the Mitzvah*. It is then necessary to be very cautious, deeply submissive.
Such therefore is the praise of Aharon, who instills an immense love of Hashem into Jewish souls, so that no modification should be conceivable.
With my blessing for immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption, Rav Menachem Schneerson, Director of the executive committee[11]
