Igrot Kodesh · Letter 225 — Sefer Torah for postwar Europe and call to aid Holocaust survivors

Volume 2 · Letter 58

By the grace of Hashem*, 11 Nissan 5706.

To the great Rav*, Hashem-fearing Chassid*, Rav A. E. Axelrod, [1] greetings and blessings.

Last week we had a visit from your uncle Gershon, the son of Rav Meir the Sofer* of Waldasta, in Georgia. Indeed, a decision was made in that city to send a Sefer Torah* to Europe [2] and your uncle entrusted us with this Mitzvah* mission. We have already purchased this Sefer Torah* and will send it to its destination within the coming days.

When he visited my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, he appeared very motivated to come to the spiritual aid of our brethren, the survivors of Europe, within the framework of the work carried out by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, under the auspices of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch* and Machaneh Israel*.

I was able to observe the admiration and respect your uncle holds for you. I therefore had the idea of asking you to write to him in order to encourage and strengthen him on this path.

Moreover, he told me that his father — that is, your grandfather [3] — wrote a Sefer Torah* on the occasion of the birth of a Rebbe. Do you have more details regarding this? [4]

You have no doubt seen my explanations at the end of Torat Shalom* [5] and of the Haggadah* with references. [6] If you have any remarks about them, please communicate them to me. After publication, I had a doubt regarding the meaning of the letters of the divine Name* in the Great Hallel*. [7] For these letters are addressed to all, and indeed one finds few equivalent notations in the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*.

In truth, the Alter Rebbe* certainly did not copy this Psalm* in the manuscript of his Siddur*. He merely indicated where it was to be recited in the Shabbat* prayer. [8] It is therefore conceivable, though unlikely, that the editor introduced these letters on his own initiative by copying this Psalm* as it is printed in the Siddur* of the Ari Zal*.

Indeed, I heard a similar explanation regarding the punctuation of the Amidah*. [9]

With my blessing for a kosher and joyous Pesach*,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee [10]
