Igrot Kodesh · Letter 224 — Distribution of Pesach youth booklet and coordination with Talmud Torah
Volume 2 · Letter 57
By the grace of Hashem*, 4 Nissan 5706.
To the honorable Chassid* who dedicates himself with alacrity to the needs of the community and accumulates positive achievements, Rav Sh. Palmer, [1] greetings and blessings.
The printing of the Pesach* booklet for youth, published by Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch*, was completed today and we are sending you a copy. Under separate cover you will receive several copies which your colleagues will be able to distribute to the students of the Talmud Torah*. Please inform me how many additional copies should be sent to you.
Our dear friend, the Hashem-fearing Chassid*, Rav D. B. Haskind, [2] conveyed to us the content of the telephone conversation he had with you regarding the funding of this publication. In accordance with his instructions and given the very short time remaining until the festival of Pesach*, which prevents any lengthy discussion, we have attributed to you the merit of the first edition of this booklet. Our Sages* emphasize that the Torah* mentions and makes known the one who fulfills a Mitzvah*, and we have therefore cited your name in it.
At the very beginning of the Seder*, we say: "This is the bread of poverty. Let all who are hungry come and eat." In this way the importance of tzedakah* associated with Pesach* is proclaimed. But before this, one washes one's hands and eats the karpas* [3] in order to surprise the children, who will then wonder about the laws and customs of Pesach*. Immediately thereafter, the Seder plate is set aside, which likewise serves to astonish the child so that he will come to ask a question.
One might say to himself: "It is enough for me to give my money, my strength, and my time for the wise child, who dedicates himself and takes interest in the faith of Israel*, or at most for the simple child, who is certainly not a sage but understands nonetheless the difference between Israel* and the other nations, and asks: 'What is this?' — with no desire for rebellion."
The answer to this is that "the Torah* speaks of four children: a wise one, a wicked one, a simple one, and one who does not know how to ask."
Moreover, the Torah* speaks of the wise child in the book of Devarim*, and of the simple child in chapter 13 of Shemot*, whereas it speaks first, already in chapter 12 of Shemot*, of the one who does not know how to ask and of the wicked one — in order to draw them close and to change them.
The answer to the wicked child is given in the verse that speaks of the one who does not know how to ask, because in truth all Jews are believers, sons of believers. They act badly only because, temporarily, they lack awareness and are even incapable of questioning themselves about it, being seized by a spirit of folly.
It is for this reason that my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, inscribed in the program of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch* the necessity of drawing close to Jewish practice those who know neither the Holy Tongue* nor even Yiddish*, and who are unfamiliar with the most common Jewish practices. The reward and the satisfaction are commensurate with the effort invested in this domain.
Words fail to define the great merit of those who take part in all of this. For someone like yourself, it would doubtless be unnecessary to describe it at greater length. We are therefore convinced that our initiative corresponds well to your desire, for one may confer merit upon another even in his absence.
Wishing you every good, immediate Teshuvah*, and immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee [4]
