Igrot Kodesh · Letter 220 — Letter permutation: Va'ed becomes Echad in Sha'ar HaYichud VeHaEmunah

Volume 2 · Letter 53

[Winter 5706[1]] Question: Can you explain what is stated at the beginning of the seventh chapter of Sha'ar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*: "By permutation of letters, the word Va'ed*, eternity, becomes Echad*, one"?

Answer: This assertion appears in the Zohar* volume 2, page 134a. The Mikdash Melech*, cited by the Nitzotzei Orot*, states at this same reference: "Indeed, the Alef* is replaced by a Vav*, since the letters Alef, Heh*, Vav, and Yud* are interchangeable. And the Chet* is replaced by an Ayin*, since the letters Alef, Chet, Heh, and Ayin are interchangeable[2]."

It follows that the letters Alef, Heh, Vav, and Yud are indeed permutable. All of them are pronounced by attaching to the following letter, are aspirated to the point of sometimes being silent, express breath, and enable each word to be articulated in speech.

Grammar manuals explain all this, and one may also consult the commentary of Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra* on the verse Exodus 3:15 and his enigma, which is printed in the introduction to his commentary on the Torah. One may also see the discourse entitled "My Sabbaths" in Likkutei Torah*, at the end of the first paragraph.

The same holds for the letters Alef, Chet, Heh, and Ayin, which are also linked, all being guttural[3].

Such is the general explanation that can be given regarding this permutation.

We must, however, understand why it is precisely these letters that are interchangeable. We will understand this by way of an explanation in the Tanya*, citing the Zohar*, according to which "the verse 'Hear O Israel, Hashem is our Hashem, Hashem is One' corresponds to the Upper Unification*, and the verse 'Blessed be the Name of the glory of His kingdom forever and ever' corresponds to the Lower Unification*." It is precisely in this connection that the correspondence between Va'ed and Echad is established[4].

The explanation of this assertion is, briefly, as follows. The Upper Unification evokes the insignificance of the sun's ray when it is an integral part of the sun — the submission to Hashem of the spiritual world of Atzilut*, the annulment of one who abstracts himself from his own person, who does not even make an effort to do so, having so completely lost awareness of his self.

The Lower Unification corresponds to the spiritual worlds of Beriah*, Yetzirah*, and Asiyah* — the submission that does not abstract from one's own personality, that retains awareness of the self, but intellectually accepts to bow down, conceiving of itself as an integral part of its source, which is the origin of its existence — like a ray of sunlight within the sun. Such an attitude is only understood, not felt.

One attains the Upper Unification by feeling one's own source. When does this occur? When that source does not veil itself, even as it engages in the creative process, causing the world of Atzilut to appear.

What has just been expounded alludes to all of this. Alef is the initial letter of Alufo shel Olam* — the Master of the world. And Chet is the initial of Chochmah* — the attribute of intellectual discovery that introduces the chain of worlds. Through the Chet, the Alef thus engages in the creative process and creates the world through the Dalet*, the initial of Dibbur*, Speech.

Nevertheless, this Speech remains linked to its source — Thought*. Moreover, it is an integral part of that source. It is the "Speech of Thought." This is why the Dalet of Echad is a large letter[5].

The submission of the Lower Unification appears when one has consciousness of being within one's source, but does not feel it. In such a case, the source reveals itself while covering itself with a veil that conceals it. This is why the creature has the sensation of possessing an independent existence.

What has been said also alludes to this. The Alef — which symbolizes the revelation of the source — joins the Vav, a stroke descending from above downward. Indeed, Alef and Vav are interchangeable.

Then the process continues toward the Chet, the initial of Chochmah, but it concerns essentially the outer aspect of this Attribute — the most superficial — which corresponds to the letter Ayin[6]. Indeed, Chet and Ayin are interchangeable.

Then Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah are created through the letters of Speech. Since the revelation occurs through the superficial aspect of Chochmah, Speech will therefore emanate from its source — from its deep aspect, which is illustrated by the large Dalet. Thus a true Speech is formed — a medium Dalet. Indeed, the large Dalet and the medium one are interchangeable.

* * *
