Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2136 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 274 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
18 Sivan 5713,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Tzvi[1],
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter, as well as, in recent days, your sefer*, which is a biography of the family of the Maskil Le'eitan. I thank you for this work.
You begin your letter by saying that you wish to bind yourself to me, without however being a chassid*, since you come from a family that is not chassidic.
You surely know that the Vilna Gaon was himself called a chassid*. Obviously, I do not mean to say that he was the chassid* of a certain person, not even of the greatest communal leader. In fact, I am referring to the following saying[2] of the author of Tanya*.
Someone once asked him what a chassid* was. He replied that this was a person who knows how to renounce his own interest, even more, who is ready to cause himself harm in order to do good to others. At that time, the controversy[3] was at its height, and the man therefore formulated his question differently, specifying that he wished an answer drawn from nigleh* and not from penimiyus haTorah*. The Alter Rebbe* explained to him that the definition he had just formulated is clearly expressed by the Gemara*. Tractate Niddah 17a says, indeed, that "one who burns his nail clippings is a chassid*, since by acting in this way he causes harm to himself[4]." You will consult the explanation given by the Tosafos on this subject.
The link with Chassidus* and its practices is quite evident. The Shulchan Aruch* sets forth the following principle: "How can you imagine that your blood is redder than that of others[5]?" And one can also envision the opposite formulation: "How can you imagine that the blood of others is redder than yours?" By contrast, Chassidus* emphasizes that the beginning of avodas Hashem* transcends all logic, all intellectual edifice. It underlines that there is no other means of putting Torah and mitzvos* into practice in the appropriate manner.
One who sets logic aside therefore takes interest first in the welfare of his fellow. He will do so all the more scrupulously the more he understands why avodas Hashem* cannot be based on reason. Indeed, the Holy One, blessed be He, always acts "middah keneged middah*," and one whose conduct is always calculated, even if he inscribes his reasoning in the realm of kedushah*, will have to give an accounting of his actions and even of his words and his thoughts. Now, it is said that "the thought of sin is graver than the sin itself." It is clear that no one has interest that this be so for him.
A question is well known[6]. If the study of Chassidus* is so necessary, what then did the earlier generations do[7]? And in our era, are there not people who do not know Chassidus* and are nevertheless upright and yirei Shamayim*?
The answer to these questions is very simple. The world is not given over to chance, chas veshalom*. Hashgachah pratis* governs the slightest detail of it. One can verify this with animals. Many species possess a limb without which they could not live, while other species have no equivalent of it, since this is not indispensable for them. And what is true of animals is, all the more so, true of humankind.
Some have not had knowledge, until now, of Chassidus*. Others belonged to the earlier generations and, at that time, these notions were reserved for an elite. This is the proof that they can lead their existence and overcome the trials with which they are confronted without necessarily having this knowledge. But it is not the same for those who know that Chassidus* exists.
The Rambam* specifies that each letter of the Torah, and a fortiori an entire portion of its teaching, has the same kedushah* as the Shema Yisrael*. It is clear that this is also true of Chassidus*.
From this point of view, the difference that exists between the animal and the Jew is the following. Hashem wished to grant true good to the latter, and He therefore did not wish that he act under constraint. He thus offered him bechirah chofshis*. Moreover, He created the yetzer hara*, which suggests to a man many explanations, various reasonings, in order to distance him from the straight path. If this yetzer hara* addresses a man who fears Hashem, it will know how to express itself even in the terms of the Shulchan Aruch*. For someone like you, it is surely needless to say more.
You ask me whether there are here persons who previously resided in Yekaterinoslav[8]. I have no knowledge of this. As for my mother, the Rebbetzin*, may Hashem grant her long life, it would be good for you to write to her directly. She will surely tell you what she knows. You may write to her in whichever language you wish.
As you ask me, I am sending you an excerpt of what was printed here at the time of my father's passing.
You granted me a brachah*, and I shall give you one as well. You were charged to convey to me the greetings of the great Rav R. Katz. You will kindly convey mine to him. I thank you for this.
May Hashem grant you success. You and your wife will lead your son Yehudah Leib to Torah, the chuppah*, and good deeds, with breadth of mind. You will redouble your ardor in disseminating the light of Yiddishkeit* in your surroundings. May Hashem grant that you succeed in this with all chassidic warmth.
With my respects and my brachah* for success,
N.B.: In the list appearing at the end of your sefer*, I saw that you have published several works on the relation between science and religion. If you could transmit them to my library, I would be grateful to you.
Indeed, it is painful to see in what manner this question is treated. Thus, the most Orthodox, when they bend over this problem, conclude in the end that many Sages of Yisrael* possessed deep scientific knowledge, that this is important for better understanding the Torah of Yisrael*, in order to establish the astronomical calculations necessary for setting the calendar or to determine whether an animal is a tereifah*.
In reality, the opposite approach should have been adopted, that is, to say that science is devoid of any foundation for one who has no emunah*, that many scientists, had they not been believers, would have completely gone astray in their existence.

[4] Indeed, burning a member of the body can harm the other members. But the chassid prefers to cause himself harm rather than risk causing a miscarriage to a pregnant woman who might walk on his nail clippings.
