Volume 7 · Letter 268 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem,

15 Sivan 5713,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

A) Concerning the radio, you tell me that one of the talmidim* of the yeshivah* will speak from time to time and that the others will listen to him. You know the effort that our holy Rebbeim made to disseminate the wellsprings of Chassidus* and what flows from it, in the broadest manner. Now, they expect us to do the same.

If this is feasible, one must therefore think of the means of being heard by the broadest circles, and not solely by a limited group of people. I am not well acquainted with the regulations on this matter in this country. I therefore say no more, but appropriate research will allow you to obtain all the necessary information.

B) You consider the possibility of using the new electric ovens, without prior kashering. Indeed, it is possible to determine their temperature and pressure. One cannot therefore apply to them the affirmation of our Sages according to which "we do not know how to determine with precision the conditions of fusion," as Pis'chei Teshuvah explains, ch. 18, par. 69.

Cease, therefore, to reason in this fashion. Such a manner of practice leaves free choice to each one, to each woman, to answer her own questions, to determine the temperature and the pressure. In the end, the non-Jewish servants will themselves take the decision, for they are sometimes entrusted with the role of cooking.

We have already been able to observe the ravages that have flowed from such permissions, even when they were, prima facie, in conformity with the Shulchan Aruch*. We have no need of such contortions. We are not acrobats in a circus, but emissaries of the Holy One, blessed be He, charged with illuminating the world with the light of Torah and mitzvos*.

We must therefore salt the meat, rinse it before and after salting, and not forget the lesson delivered by the necessity of removing the blood from the meat — namely, the importance of removing all chiyus* and all force from the nefesh habahamis*. It is in this way that the meat can be made kosher* and prepared so that it merges with the flesh of the man, created in the Divine image, Who is upon the heavenly Throne. It is surely needless to say more.
