By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me that your state of health has improved, that you no longer suffer from the crises that affected your kidneys. You should see in this a message from Hashem. The Baal Shem Tov* teaches, indeed, that everything a Jew sees or hears delivers to him a teaching about the manner in which he is to serve Hashem.

In this case, this teaching is the following. Hashem has granted you success and your crises affecting your physical kidneys have ceased. You must therefore do all that is in your power so that the crises of your spiritual kidneys also cease. For this, you must meditate upon what is said in ch. 41 of Tanya*: "And behold, Hashem stands before him. The whole earth is filled with His honor. He examines and probes the kidneys."

This enables one to answer also the question you raise in your letter. You have seen a person to whom one ought to give a tochachah*, but who does not accept it, and you ask me what should be done.

The answer is evident, in light of what has just been said. According to a well-known teaching of our Sages, found in tractate Berachos 6b, "the words of one who fears Hashem are listened to," and "words emanating from the heart enter the heart." You will consult Sefer HaYashar, gate 13, cited by the Shenei Luchos HaBris, gate of letters, at the letter Lamed.

במענה על מכתבו, בו כותב ע"ד הטבת מצב בריאותו ושחדלו ממנו התקפות הכליות. הנה בטח רואה בזה ג"כ רמז מלמעלה ע"פ פתגם הבעש"ט, שבכל דבר נראה ונשמע לאיש הישראלי יש ללמוד בזה הוראה בעבודת השי"ת. וההוראה בהנ"ל הוא, שכאשר מצליח השי"ת וחדלו התקפות הכליות בגשמיות, הנה עליו להשתדל ביתר שאת ויתר עז שיחדלו ג"כ התקפות הכליות ברוחניות, והוא ע"י ההתבוננות בפרט במ"ש בתניא פרק מ"א, והנה ה' נצב עליו ומלא כל הארץ כבודו ומביט עליו ובוחן כליות כו'.

ובהנ"ל נפתרת ג"כ שאלתו במכתבו במה שראה באחד שראוי וזקוק לתוכחה, אבל אינו מקבל אותה ומבקש עצה בזה, הנה ע"פ הנ"ל מובן המענה, והוא מרז"ל הידוע (ברכות ו' ע"ב) מי שיש בו יר"ש דבריו נשמעים ודברים היוצאים מן הלב נכנסים אל הלב (ר"ת בספר הישר שער י"ג. הובא בשל"ה שער האותיות אות ל').
