Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2127 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 265
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Sivan 5713,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you,
I received with pleasure your letter, which was not dated. A few days later, I was satisfied to also receive a letter from your mother who, baruch Hashem*, is doing better. May Hashem grant that her state of health continue to improve, that she derive much nachas* from yourself and your husband — chassidic nachas* — from upright and blessed children.
It seems to me that I have already written to you a few times to underline that, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages, action is essential, not study. It is the same for our Torah and its mitzvos*, for which the emphasis is systematically placed on actual fulfillment, less on speech and still less on thought.
Certainly, emunah* and knowledge are at the basis of practice, especially according to what Chassidus* explains, commenting on the verse "Know the Elokim of your father," according to what it says of ahavas Hashem* and yiras Hashem*, which are at the source of the Torah and mitzvos* that one practices thereafter. For all that, during the greater part of day and night, that is, during most years, what is expected of us is concrete fulfillment, and this therefore conditions the depth of understanding.
It is extraordinary to consider what our Sages say regarding the Torah. Indeed, this was supposed to be given to the malachim*, who have no material aspect and therefore cannot act. This is the reason why the commentators call them "separate intellects." Now, Moshe Rabbeinu*, shepherd of all Yisrael* for all generations, brought a brilliant response to their claim by emphasizing that the Torah of Hashem had to be given to a being endowed with a yetzer hara*, who therefore went down to Mitzrayim*.
Thereafter, the children of Yisrael* said: "Naaseh veNishma*," through the powers of intellect, in the world of thought. It is precisely thus that they prepared matan Torah* and were themselves able to receive it.
Through these few lines, I am also alluding to a concrete action that concerns you, and I permit myself to speak to you of it because you yourself addressed this subject in your letter. It would be good for you to take an interest in and concentrate, at least for some time, on the concrete aspect of daily existence, even if it seems less interesting than thought and analysis. Without doubt, your capacity for thinking and analysis will be improved thereby.
It would be good, at least in thought, always to have before you the saying of the Baal Shem Tov*: "'Serve Hashem with joy,' that is, in all your ways."
