Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2126 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 264
By the grace of Hashem,
14 Sivan 5713,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I received with pleasure your letter of 8 Sivan, which followed a long silence. In accordance with your request, I shall mention all those whom you cite when I am near the tziyun* of my father-in-law the Rebbe, that they may obtain the satisfaction of their needs. I await good news on this subject.
You also speak of your son in this letter, and I was horrified to note that, after having been a talmid* of a yeshivah* in which both nigleh* and Chassidus* are studied, he is currently pursuing his studies in another yeshivah*, where Chassidus* is not taught.
A few generations ago, it was not an absolute obligation for everyone to study Chassidus*. At present, by contrast, in the words of the Arizal*, cited in ch. 26 of Iggeres HaKodesh of the Alter Rebbe*, "it is permitted, and it is a mitzvah*, to reveal this chochmah*."
How much more so is this the case in the present era, when the darkness is intense and deep. Moreover, the situation is all the more dramatic in that one passes off light as darkness and darkness as light. And, if one perceives this in the rest of the world, this is even more evident in our Holy Land, which will be rebuilt and restored by Moshiach Tzidkeinu*, very soon and in our days, amen*.
It is therefore an absolute obligation to do all that is possible to strengthen yiras Shamayim*. Now, the study of penimiyus haTorah* plays a determining role in this matter. Furthermore, one acquires Torah by binding oneself to friends.
What has just been said is only generalities. More specifically, for what concerns you, your son has already been steeped in this study. If he withdraws from it, chas veshalom*, he would thereby damage the honor due to a part of the Torah. And if the reason is the lack of interest in such study for some reason, it is known that one thereby transgresses a grave prohibition, as our Sages explain in tractate Eruvin 64a.
Once again, I do not seek to determine to what extent your son's relatives or his ancestors were distanced from such study. It is true that these are mitigating circumstances, but this is not the case for your son, who has already undertaken this study and then distanced himself from it.
It is equally evident that many young men have not had access to the lamp of Torah, which is its inner dimension. Despite this, they fear Hashem and are upright, and why then should we concern ourselves with what is hidden? Nevertheless, hashgachah pratis* has caused that such-and-such a man, son of such-and-such, has had knowledge of penimiyus haTorah*, and even more, that he found himself, for various reasons, in a school conducted in the spirit of this teaching. It is clear that his situation is quite different.
I do not want to expand on all this, so as not to grieve you or impose suffering upon you. For all that, I had to write you these few lines, for Yidden* have collective responsibility[1] and the one who can prevent…[2]. Our Sages say, in tractate Shabbos 55a: "If it is evident to You…"[3].
Without entering into subtle reasoning, it was essential that I write you these few lines, for, in my view, this message can condition the very foundation of your son's life. And, as I have said, success in study is possible only when one evolves in a favorable context.
With my respects and my brachah* that you should give good news in all these areas,
Notes
[1] Each one must therefore prevent the other from acting wrongly.
[2] One who can prevent his fellow from a negative accomplishment is obligated to do so.
[3] "The midas hadin* said to the Holy One, blessed be He: 'Master of the world, in what do these differ from those?' He answered: 'Some are perfect tzaddikim* and others are complete reshaim*.' He said again: 'Master of the world, they could have prevented the others from acting wrongly and did not do so.' Hashem replied: 'It is evident to Me that they would not have succeeded in preventing them.' He then said: 'If it is evident to You, is it evident to them?'"
