I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Iyar, by which you seek my counsel for your brother, that he should have healthy boys.

First of all, it must be verified that his marriage was not, on his part or on that of his wife, a lack of respect toward a Jew or a Jewess with whom marriage had previously been contemplated. Perhaps the final decision was practically made, then, for some reason, everything was annulled.

If there is reason to fear that this was indeed the case, this person must be located, it must be verified whether she is already married, and you must write to me to tell me how matters stand. In any event, it would be good for your brother to have his tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of his house. It will also be necessary to ensure that his wife properly covers her head.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ג אייר, בו שואל עצתי בהנוגע לאחיו מר... שי' שיהיו בניו זכרים זרעא חייא וקיימא.

הנה צריך לברר אצלו וכן אצל זוגתו שיחיו, אם בהשידוך שלהם לא הי' ענין של פגיעה בכבוד בן ישראל או בת ישראל, היינו שאצל אחד מהם הי' משא ומתן על דבר שידוך וכבר הי' קרוב לפועל ואחר כך מאיזה סיבה נתבטל הדבר, ואם יש יסוד לחשש זה, צריך לברר מקום הנ"ל, ואם כבר נשתדך הנ"ל כו' ויכתוב לי בזה. ובכל אופן כדאי שיבדוק אחיו שי' את התפילין שלו וכן המזוזות בביתם. וכן לברר אצלו אם זוגתו תחי' נזהרת בכיסוי הראש. וידוע מאמר הזהר - דף קכ"ו ע"א - אשר צניעות האשה ובפרט ענין כיסוי הראש הרי על ידי זה מתברכין בברכאן דלעילא בברכאן דלתתא בעותרא בבנים ובני בנים.
