By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of Lag BaOmer*, the day of the hilula* of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. You know the explanation given by various texts of Chassidus* of the expression frequently found in the Zohar*: "He opened"[1]. Indeed, the Sages[2] opened the way so that it would be easier for all those who live after them to serve Hashem.

Consequently, I am surprised that you make no mention, in your entire letter, of the dissemination of the wellsprings of penimiyus haTorah* and the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov*, whose hilula* is on Shavuos*, zman matan Toraseinu*.

I hope it is solely an oversight in your letter, but that you are indeed conducting such activity, in measure with the great means at your disposal. Moreover, despite what is generally thought, nigleh* was given on Shavuos*, zman matan Toraseinu*, in a hidden manner, in allusion within the Aseres HaDibros*, while all the children of Yisrael* observed in an evident manner penimiyus haTorah* and the Merkavah*[3], as the Midrash explains.

קבלתי מכתבו מל"ג בעומר, הוא יומא הילולא דרשב"י. וידוע המובא בכ"מ בדא"ח בדיוק לשון המורגל בזוהר הקדוש, פתח כו', שהפירוש בזה הוא שהם פתחו הצנור שעי"ז תוקל העבודה בזה אל כל הבאים אחריהם, ולכן לפלא שבכל מכתביו אינו מזכיר ע"ד הפצת מעיינות פנימיות התורה ומעיינות הבעל שם-טוב אשר יום ההילולא שלו הוא בחג השבועות זמן מתן תורתנו. ותקותי אשר אין זה חסר אלא בכתב, אבל הענין נעשה בהשתדלות הראוי' כראוי לגודל ערכו ובפרט שהיפך דעת העולם, הנה דוקא בחג השבועות זמן מתן תורתנו, הנה תורת הנגלה ניתנה בנסתר וברמז בעשרת הדברות ותורת הנסתר מעשה מרכבה ראו כל ישראל בנגלה וכדאי' במדרש.
