Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2109 — Health
Volume 7 · Letter 247
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Iyar 5713,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav David Meir[1], the shochet*,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of the twenty-ninth day of the Omer*. You ask me about kuntres* no. 84[2], which explains that the chiyus* always remains identical, whether it is in the brain or in the toenail, since it proceeds from the etzem*. Indeed, various texts, in particular the maamar* entitled "VeNikdashti," in Likkutei Torah*, in Parshas Emor, affirm that the chiyus* of the head is more elevated than that of the rest of the body.
The distinction between these two texts is the following. One distinguishes the etzem* of the chiyus* from its revelation. The etzem* of the chiyus* is always identical. One cannot, therefore, say that the foot is less alive than the head.
It is not the same for the revelation of the chiyus* through the kochos hanefesh*. These are numerous. There are precisely 613, which is proof that this is no longer the etzem* of the chiyus*. The latter evolves according to the limbs[3] in which it is introduced. You will consult on this subject ch. 51 of Tanya*.
One can find an application of all this in nigleh* and in avodas Hashem*. From the standpoint of the spark of Yiddishkeit* that each one possesses, no distinction can be made between the greatest of the great and the lowliest of the lowly. It is not the same for knowledge.
One finds the equivalent of all this for Torah and mitzvos*. Thus, "VeNikdashti" is possible only "betoch Bnei Yisrael"[4]. In this matter, no distinction can be made between Moshe Rabbeinu* and the most modest Jew of the present era[5]. Indeed, here it is the spark of Yiddishkeit* implanted in each one, the etzem* of the chiyus* of each person, that comes into play.
It is not the same for the 248 positive commandments and the 365 prohibitions, for which various distinctions are made within the Jewish people[6].
With my brachah* for good health for yourself and your wife,
Notes
[1] Rav D. M. Shulman. See concerning him letter no. 1935.
[2] Of the writings of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
[3] Of the body.
[4] The praise of Hashem is recited specifically in the presence of ten Jews.
[5] Each one constitutes no less than one and no more than one in the necessary minyan.
[6] Thus, for example, there are mitzvos reserved for kohanim and others for the king.
2109*
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Iyar 5713,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 11 Iyar, in which you tell me that you wish to continue your studies in a Chabad yeshivah* in the Holy Land. You do not specify whether it is the Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Lod or that of Toras Emes in Yerushalayim. Nevertheless, you are uncomfortable because you have been told that one of the necessary conditions for entering this yeshivah* is not to shave one's beard.
Now, you intend to return to your country thereafter. Furthermore, you have never been accustomed to wearing a beard. You therefore ask me for a more lenient situation, that is, the possibility of not satisfying this condition, which is for you difficult and even practically impossible to maintain.
I am surprised by this question. You know how grave it is to commit chillul Hashem* and to depart from the established order, even on a point that is not fundamental. Imagine then the following situation. You will enter a yeshivah* in which all wear a beard, and you will be the only one who is shaven.
Moreover, this is, in this case, a yeshivah* in which the inner part of the Torah is taught, where ahavas Hashem* and yiras Shamayim* are cultivated. Now, the beginning of Tur Orach Chaim, cited by the Rema at the same reference, says clearly that the fundamental rule is: "Do not be embarrassed before scoffers."
I shall not reproduce here what the inner teaching of the Torah, the holy Zohar*, and various seforim* say, according to which the hairs of the beard correspond to the Yud-Gimmel Middos HaRachamim*. It is through their intermediary that one obtains success in the study of Torah and the practice of mitzvos*.
All agree to recognize that the beard is an integral part of the Divine appearance. To remove it, including according to the opinions that permit it in certain ways, indeed has the effect of erasing this Divine appearance.
Thus, a young man has had the merit of being led by hashgachah pratis* to the country "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." He desires to study not only nigleh* but also penimiyus haTorah*. Now, the Torah is altogether the chochmah* and the will of Hashem. Its inner dimension expresses the secrets that were previously reserved for an elite. In our era, for various reasons, these have been revealed and disseminated to many Jews. Nevertheless, one must not forget the truth.
These secrets are indeed the inner aspect of the will and the chochmah* of Hashem. In comparison to this, what importance can those who mock young men wearing a beard have, since they wish to fulfill the mitzvos* in the best manner and preserve the Divine appearance of their face?
Moreover, these young men, for the most part, are considered disciples of the Tzemach Tzedek*, who holds that shaving the beard is a Torah prohibition, as is explained at length in his responsa, Yoreh Deah, ch. 93.
It is needless to specify how grave it is, according to the Gemara*, to find oneself in the place of Rav and to adopt conduct that goes against his opinion.
May Hashem grant you to maintain yourself fruitfully on the straight path, on the way that leads to the house of Hashem, and to attain such a result without too many trials.
With my brachah*,
For the Rebbe shlita,
the secretary,
