Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2104 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 239
By the grace of Hashem,
12 Iyar 5713,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you,
I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me about the place where you should settle after your wedding, which will be celebrated in a good and propitious moment[1]. You share with me the arguments leading you to lean toward the Holy Land, near your parents. You conclude your letter by saying that one receives the brachah* of Hashem wherever one finds oneself, provided one merits it. On the other hand, if one does not merit it, chas veshalom*[2].
Without doubt, Hashem can send His brachah* whatever the place in which one settles. Nevertheless, our Sages affirm in various texts that one must opt for the place and manner that, according to logic and the ways of nature, will allow one to earn one's living without resorting to wonders and miracles.
Certainly, a man secures his own parnasah* in accordance with the influence Hashem grants him. Nevertheless, you know the teaching of our holy Torah according to which one must systematically have recourse to the ways of nature and beseech the Master of the world to grant, by means of such an attitude, supernatural success.
Consequently, to return to your question, you must opt for the place where it will be easiest for you to earn your livelihood, both materially and spiritually. Of course, it is generally not easy to determine how one will secure one's own parnasah*. However, certain countries offer more numerous and varied opportunities. It is simpler there to make use of one's knowledge and aptitudes. It is then more convenient to settle there.
In light of all these elements, it seems to me that you should rather consider settling in the United States.
Obviously, this is not an absolute obligation that cannot be reconsidered. Perhaps, with time, you will see possibilities that, for the moment, do not yet present themselves to you. Nevertheless, as of today, my position is the one I have just set forth.
I fully understand your nostalgia and your desire to reside next to your parents. Despite this, you cannot give up what is essential and conditions the years and decades to come, solely on account of this nostalgia. Of course, this feeling is deeply implanted in you. But the practice of the world is that sons, and even daughters, acquire their independence and, when more favorable conditions present themselves to them, far from their parents, the common practice is for them to accept these.
Moreover, such a situation can help children become independent, allowing them to reveal their deepest strengths. When one is far away, one knows that it cannot be otherwise.
You tell me that you engage in pedagogical activity. Suitable effort will allow you to find its equivalent everywhere, in any country.
With my brachah* that your settling should be a happy one, materially and spiritually together, that you should build an everlasting edifice based on Torah and mitzvos*, as they are illuminated by the teaching of Chassidus*.
