Greetings and blessings,

A) I duly received your letters of 25 and 28 Nissan. In the meantime, and although you do not confirm it to me in these letters, you have no doubt yourself received my letter wishing you a good Yom Tov*.[1]

B) You speak of the means of placing the children out of reach of the missionaries.[2] Now, I did not mean to say that one must save one or two children in one place, then one or two in another, in order then to place them with private individuals — even though such a result is in no way negligible, for "one who saves a Jewish soul is regarded as if he had saved the entire world."

Indeed, my proposal concerned a methodical action and the creation of a specific institution, capable of taking in forty or fifty of these children, with a competent director and competent teachers.

Obviously, this does not mean that one must, from the outset, gather these forty children. They may be only ten. But, in any event, one must not proceed in the manner you describe in your letter. On the one hand, one will thus be able to save these children. Moreover, one will create a position for this director and these teachers.

In the human body, the health of one limb is directly conditioned by that of all the others, and the same is so for what is the subject of our discussion. The existence of this institution could strengthen all the others, all the more so since Mr. Kol[3] promised me to obtain the major part of its budget from the various authorities, if it functioned properly.

I was satisfied to learn that you saw Mr. Shazar[4] purchase the recently published collection of letters of the Alter Rebbe*, and that you spoke with him. You know the image one gives, on this subject. When a small spark remains in an ember upon which one blows, it strengthens and broadens. The same is so in this case. When one addresses a person who, for various reasons, possesses a spark that does not burn strongly, one must breathe life into him, come to his aid in order to develop this spark. And, who knows what may follow from it?

מאשר הנני בזה קבלת מכתביו מכ"ה וכ"ח ניסן, ובטח קבל בינתים מכתבי בברכת החג, אף שאינו מזכיר עד"ז במכתביו הנ"ל.

ב) מ"ש בענין הצלת ילדים מהמיסיאן, הנה לא לזה היתה כוונתי שיצילו במקום אחד ילד או שנים ובמקום השני על דרך זה, ואח"כ יסדרום אצל אנשים פרטים, אף שגודל הענין גם באופן כזה הוא עד אין שיעור והמקיים נפש אחת מישראל כאלו עולם מלא קיים, אבל אחכ"ז הנה הצעתי היתה אודות עבודה מסודרה והקמת מוסד בית חינוך לילדים שצ"ל עכ"פ מ-נ ילדים או ילדות, מנהל מתאים, מורים כו'. מובן שאין הכרח להתחיל תיכף בארבעים ילדים, ואפשר להיות גם בעשרה, אבל בכל אופן לא באופן הנ"ל שכותב. ונוסף על ענין הצלת הילדים מצ"ע, הנה הי' זה ג"כ מקום פרנסה בשביל מנהל, מורים כו'. וכמו שבגוף האדם שבריאות אבר אחד הרי זה פועל תוקף בשאר האברים, הרי גם בזה אפשר הי' לקוות ע"י מוסד זה תוספת תוקף גם בשאר המוסדות, ובפרט שהבטיח לי מר קול שי' אם יהי' מוסד מתאים, יתנו רוב תקציבו מהמשרדים השונים...

נהניתי ממ"ש שפגש את מר שז"ר כשהי' קונה ספר מכתבי רבינו הזקן שי"ל זה עתה, וכן משיחתו אתו עמו, וידוע המשל ע"ז שכשיש גחלת עם ניצוץ קטן, ומפיחים עליו רוח, הרי מחזקים את הניצוץ ומגדלים אותו, ועד"ז הוא כשמדברים עם איש שאפשר שמפני כמה סיבות הניצוץ בנפשו אינו בוער באש מתלקחת, וע"י הפחת רוח חיים, מסייעים בידו לחזק את הניצוץ ולהגדילו, ואין אתנו יודע אפשריות התוצאות והתועלת שיהי' מזה...

התהלים יהל אור זה עתה נתקבל.
