Volume 7 · Letter 236

B'ezras Hashem*,

8 Iyar 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 6 Iyar, and I am glad to note that you have finally understood what the problem was.[1] Indeed, you have realized that certain aspects of your conduct have distanced you from the members of your community. It is clear that there are two reasons for this, corresponding to the two perspectives of your conduct — toward yourself and in relation to your surroundings.

As to this last point, it seems to me I have already told you that you must take an interest in what concerns the members of your community, including when this has no bearing on your rabbinic functions, on Torah* and mitzvos*. When someone notices that the injunction "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is being applied toward him, even if not exactly "as yourself," he himself applies the words of the verse "as the face is reflected in water…"[2]

As to the first point, it is quite obvious that what you write does not explain why the members of your community distance themselves from you. You attribute this state of affairs to your scrupulous observance of the Shulchan Aruch*, to your refusal to eat in others' houses or to cut your hair during Chol HaMoed* or the period of the Omer.

In fact, the true reason is the opposite of all this, for men in the United States, whatever, by the way, their own conduct, like to observe that of others, in particular of those whom they choose as leaders, and to find that the latter make no compromises. For such a manner of acting denotes an imperfect adherence, a lack of faith in what one professes.

As for you, if one may fear that your conduct imbued with yiras Shamayim* distances others, the fact that you do not shave during Chol HaMoed* or the Omer is surely not the deciding factor. For you shave on all the other days of the year, although you do so with a product[3] — and this poses much more clearly a problem. And the same is so for all the other questions that arise. If the members of your community bear you a grudge, even if they do not say it clearly, it is because they do not understand your attitude and suspect you of making compromises. You must understand what I mean.

May Hashem* grant you success and allow you to settle in a fitting manner, both materially and spiritually, for yourself and for all the members of your household.

I am enclosing the kuntres* that has been published on the occasion of Lag BaOmer*, which is approaching.[4] You will see in it how important it is to invest oneself fully in what one does. It is only in this way that one can obtain a concrete result. Of course, the same holds for what concerns the study of the Torah* and the practice of the mitzvos*.

With my blessing,

[2] The heart of a man is reflected in that of his fellow.

[3] And not with a razor — that is, in a manner that some poskim permit.
