Igrot Kodesh · Letter 210 — Designating Donation for Chassidut Publications

To the honorable Chassid,* who fears Hashem and faithfully fulfills his mission, Rav Y. HaKohen[1],

I send you greetings and blessings.

I received your check for Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch* in due course, and you will find the receipts enclosed. Please forgive my delay, which is due to my many activities.

When you were here, you indicated that you wished to contribute financially to the edition of the Chassidut* books we publish. Based on that statement, I have designated — if you are in agreement — your contribution to the edition of the Kuntres Torat HaChassidut*[2] at twenty-five dollars, and to the Kuntres Etz Chaim*[3] at thirty-five dollars. The Kuntres Torat HaChassidut* is being sent to you under separate cover. The Kuntres Etz Chaim* is not yet available. As soon as it is, we will send it to you.

Other books of Chassidut* are in press, but donors have already covered their printing costs, in which I cannot therefore include you.

I take this opportunity to ask you to kindly return the transcript of the Passover* discourses[2] that I lent you some time ago.

This week's Parasha* sets forth the laws of Passover* and concludes (Bo* 13:5) with: "And you shall tell your son." This teaches us that when the Holy One, blessed be He, liberated the children of Israel from Egypt,* He asked them to speak to their children — to show them the importance of Torah* and Mitzvot.*

Our Sages emphasize, in tractate Pesachim* 10:4, that a father's teaching to his son must be tailored to the child's disposition. The father must observe the workings of his mind and discover the means of motivating him.

But more than this — it is the same at all times, in every era. For one must leave one's own Egypt* every day. It is therefore essential to bring one's fellow, whoever he may be, closer to Torah* and Mitzvot.* To this end, one may speak to him, write to him, or participate in the publication of a book that he will read.

May you derive great satisfaction and joy from all members of your family, whom you will lead toward Torah,* the marriage canopy,* and good deeds.

הצעק שלו להמרכז לעניני חינוך בעתו נתקבל, ומצורף בזה הקבלות, ואתו הסליחה על אשר, מפני רוב הטרדות, נתאחר הדבר עד עתה.

על יסוד מה שדבר אתי בהיותו פה, אשר חפץ הוא להשתתף בהוצאות הדפסת הספרים - ספרי חסידות דא"ח - היוצאים לאור על ידינו שתפתי אותו אם יסכים לזה , בהדפסת הקונטרס "תורת החסידות" בסכום של עשרים וחמש דולר ובהדפסת הקונטרס "עץ חיים" בסכום של שלשים וחמש דאלאר, - קונטרס תורת החסידות הנני שולח לו בחבילה בפ"ע, קונטרס עץ חיים עדיין לא נגמר בדפוס וכשיוגמר יושלח לו.

נמצאים עתה בדפוס עוד ספרי חסידות, אבל אנשים אחדים התנדבו לתת את הוצאות ההדפסה ולכן איני יכול לשתפו בזה.

אשתמש בהזדמנות זו לבקשו להחזיר לי את "הרייד" מחג הפסח אשר לוויתי לו זה מכבר.

בדיני חג הפסח שאודותו מדבר בסדרה דשבוע זה, מסיים (פ' בא יג, ה) והגדת לבנך, וזה מלמדנו לדעת, אשר כמו בזמן צאת ישראל ממצרים הזהירם הקב"ה על ההשתדלות להגיד להבן ולהבינו את ענין התורה והמצוה, ואמרו לפי דעתו של בן אביו מלמדו (פסחים פ"י מ"ד) היינו שצריך להתבונן במהלך נפש המחונך ולחפש הדרכים איך לקרבו, כן הוא בכל עת וזמן, שבכל יום יש ענין יצי"מ, עיקר גדול הוא ההשתדלות שגם השני, מי שיהי', יתקרב לתורה ומצות אם ע"י שידבר אתו בפה או ע"י דברים הנכתבים או הנדפסים שהשתתף בהוצאתם לאור...

ויהי רצון שיקבל רוב נחת ועונג מכל ב"ב ויגדלם לתורה לחופה ולמעשים טובים.
