B'ezras Hashem*,

8 Iyar 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I duly received your letters of 2 and 5 Iyar, with their enclosures.

B) You mention this year's deficit, which exceeds four thousand dollars. There is no reason whatsoever to be distressed about it. Perhaps it would be good to launch a specific collection for the elimination of this debt, so that it does not undermine the annual appeal and the regular income, or, in any case, hampers it only very little. Even in this latter case, it will be justified.

I have, recently, written to several of our institutions[1] to explain that the expenses and the income of an establishment belonging to my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, are not what one thinks. One must not reduce the number of talmidim* because the financial means do not permit having more.

The solution is therefore the following. One must multiply the channels conveying the brachah*. Indeed, what is revealed physically first comes into existence in a moral manner. Now, the channels conveying the moral brachah* are the talmidim* and the holy studies that one teaches them.

One must therefore, at first, multiply the brachah* at its source by developing the level of the studies and the talmidim*, quantitatively and qualitatively. Then, you will reveal all of this here below, in concrete fashion. What follows from this is quite evident.

C) You speak to me of the time[2] that the teachers of the school devote to their commercial activities. This does not answer the question posed, which did not concern the fact that they are in the street while they should be teaching at the yeshivah*, but rather the manner in which these activities also absorb them while they are present at the yeshivah*.

This is why, according to the program they have established, the wardrobes and everything necessary for their commerce are ready as soon as the time of study ends, so that, in the blink of an eye, the seforim* are closed, the merchandise is laid out, and, a moment later, those who belong to the beis hamidrash* are transformed into people whose activity takes place in the street, and they run off to where they think they will find their livelihood and that of the members of their family.

In such a case, it is inconceivable that they do not prepare themselves, mentally and even verbally, during the time of study, for the commercial activity they will engage in as soon as the lesson ends.

D) The disproportion between the time devoted to secular studies and physical education, on the one hand, and to sacred studies, on the other, is alarming. Is it a matter of "conquering the queen in my presence"?[3]

May Hashem* come to the aid of each one of us so that we do not exchange the most fundamental element for the most secondary. Such an exchange is, in fact, unthinkable. Even more, it harms also that which is secondary. This is self-evident.

With my blessing for success in your sacred mission,

P. S.: I am enclosing the kuntres* that has been published on the occasion of Lag BaOmer*, which is approaching.[4] No doubt you will make it available to as many as possible.

Following the content of my letter, this kuntres* explains the great importance of concentrating one's attention on what one does. It is only on this condition that one can know success. You will therefore consult this text.

You know the account that my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, related, in the name of the chassid* Rav Binyamin Kletzker. The latter, drawing up the balance sheet of a commercial activity, wrote, in place of the total, "Ein od milvado" — "There is nothing besides Him." He was asked how he could, while doing his work, have a chassidic thought.

He answered that it had necessarily to be so. For if one can, while standing before Hashem*,[5] have foreign thoughts[6] connected to one's work, all the more so, during that work, must one have pure and holy thoughts.

It would be good to relate this account to all the chassidim* who own a business, and in particular to those who, according to the will of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, ought to have devoted themselves to study, but have, recently, modified their attitude and become businessmen. It is, of course, unnecessary to say more.

Notes

[1] See letters nos. 905 and 1195.

[2] Presumably small.

[3] Paraphrase of the remark of Achashverosh, regarding Queen Esther, related in the Megillah, which marked the end of Haman. In this case, is it a matter of bringing children to the yeshivah only to impose so many secular studies upon them?

[4] This refers to kuntres no. 108, found in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5701 of the previous Rebbe, on p. 115.

[5] During tefillah.

[6] To that tefillah.
