Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2079 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 214 · To: grand Rav
B'ezras Hashem*,
13 Nissan 5713,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem*
and devotes himself to communal needs, full
of energy and multiplying positive accomplishments,
Rav Zev,[1]
Greetings and blessings,
I received, in its time, your letter, as well as your sefer*, the Nivei Zahav, which you offered me. I thank you very much for this kindness. I read, from time to time, articles about your travels. I also receive news of you from people residing in the countries you visit. May Hashem* allow you to seize every opportunity to grow and to adorn the Torah* of Hashem*.
You comment on various explanations of our Sages relating to Rav, and your explanations are very pleasing. In connection with these, as well as with the content of your letter, I would like to offer an additional citation, and indeed I am surprised that you do not mention the following statement of our Sages relating to Rav, which describes most faithfully his life and his work, delivering an evident and fundamental teaching for the present era.
In tractate Eruvin 6a,[2] our Sages say that "Rav found a clearing and surrounded it with a fence." It is explained, on this subject, that Rav was returning at that time from Eretz Yisrael*, and our Sages note in the Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*: "Why was it called Eretz?[3] Because it wished to do the will of its Creator." Likewise, Yisrael* recalls the verse: "You have struggled with angels and with men, and you have prevailed," despite the darkness of night, even though he[4] was alone.
Coming from Eretz Yisrael*, Rav went to Bavel*,[5] place of the mixture of light and darkness, of good and evil, of holy and profane, a place that causes the boundaries to disappear.[6] Being in Bavel*, he distanced himself to a place from which the Torah* was absent, according to the explanation of the Iggeres of Rav Sherira Gaon. Rashi* explains: "He found a clearing in which the mitzvos* were neglected."
Such a situation is surprising. How can a Jew neglect the mitzvos* of his Father in Heaven, which are at the source of his very existence? Is he not then like a fish leaving the water? The Alter Rebbe* himself states that "a Jew does not want and cannot separate himself from Divinity." Rashi* therefore explains the source of this neglect: these men were ignorant of the Torah*.
In such a case, one is the victim of the winds blowing in the world, which advocate a less rigorous attitude toward Torah* and mitzvos*, a situation of compromise, at least temporarily, in order to attract these ignorant ones, to draw them close to Torah* and mitzvos*, which they will then perform more easily. Their submission to Hashem* will be lessened. Their body and their nefesh habahamis* will have a greater share. But one will know how to justify such an attitude by claiming that it is legitimate to abandon what is secondary in order to preserve the essential.
Rav, master of Yisrael* in galus*, brought the teaching of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi to Bavel* and established its principles. When one encounters such a situation, it is not a matter of making compromises to lighten the burden and, in the words of the prophet, of "drawing sin with cords of vanity" — this attraction being in proportion to the sin committed.
My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, formulated an image on this subject. A man advances along the great road, then, as time passes, he finds himself in a dark forest, among wild beasts. Now, it is quite clear that he did not arrive there suddenly, that he did not pass, without transition, from the middle of the road into the depths of the forest. At first, this man turned aside by a hairsbreadth, then by another added to yet another, and so he traveled a great distance.
The contribution of a Rav, for his era and for all generations, particularly at the present time, when limits are being challenged and values are flouted beyond all measure, consists, when he perceives a place that has not been fenced in, in placing a barrier there, in taking an additional precaution. It is only in this way that one can protect that clearing and the people found within it.
In consulting your sefer*, I was able to appreciate the eloquence that Hashem* has granted you. This is also what is told to me by people who have attended your lectures. May Hashem* allow you to make use of it to direct yourself along the path that has just been described and that has been transmitted to us by our masters who were in galus*, in the expression of the Sages, in tractate Sanhedrin 17b.
Each time you find a clearing, outside Eretz Yisrael* and, all the more so, in the land toward which the eyes of Hashem* are constantly turned, the palace of the King, King of kings, HaKadosh Baruch Hu*, you will place a fence there. And you know the following promise of Hashem*: "Open for Me an opening like the point of a needle, and I will open for you an opening like the entrance of the Sanctuary."
It is remarkable that the three passages of the Talmud* mentioning the fact that Rav found a clearing and fenced it in describe the building of such a barrier in order to specify limits in the mineral, vegetable and animal domains.
Tractate Eruvin 6a speaks of a mineral barrier, between the private domain[7] — that of the Yachid of the world — and the public domain. Tractate Eruvin 100b mentions "the tree of the field,"[8] compared to a man, when it is moist and alive, as it is said "you who cling to Hashem* your Lrd are alive," or when it is dry and dead. Finally, tractate Chullin 110a speaks of the mixture of meat and milk, which introduces a confusion within the animal kingdom, according to Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun 14, the Recanati, the Shenei Luchos HaBris* and other commentators as well.
With my respects and my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach* festival,
I am enclosing a copy of my letter addressed to all,[9] which will surely interest you.
