Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2077 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 7 · Letter 212 · To: grand Rav

B'ezras Hashem*,

11 Nissan 5713,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem*,

devotes himself to communal needs and assumes

a Divine mission, Rav Yitzchak,[1]

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, with delay, for various reasons, and you will kindly excuse me.

Following my previous correspondence,[2] you asked me about the assertion of Tikkunei Zohar* that the union between Yaakov* and Rachel* was severed, thus excluding the possibility of receiving influence through Malchus*, the Attribute of celestial Kingship, even when this influence is not imbued with that level.

In my view, the term "union" suggests an explanation contrary to yours. The general introduction, which is well known, briefly explains all of this. The existence of the sefiros* and their functioning are independent of men. Several texts of Kabbalah* and of Chassidus* establish a difference between the deep union and the superficial union of Chochmah*, the Attribute of intellectual discovery, and Binah*, that of reasoned analysis.

The superficial union is independent of human effort, and it is described as immutable. Even after Mattan Torah*, certain processes still allow it to be obtained, and it is found even in the Torah*. Thus, Shabbos* is intrinsically holy, whereas the festival is proclaimed by men.[3]

You will consult the introduction of the Pri Etz Chaim*, which describes the equivalent of these two situations within the sefiros* themselves.

The same applies to avodas Hashem* properly speaking, when it is expressed through thought and, all the more so, through speech, or, even more clearly, through action. There results, on high, the introduction of a Light into the sefirah* of Malchus*. Of course, in this matter, action is even more decisive than speech, and speech more than thought.

How much more so is this the case when speech reaches someone else here below, and even more so when the emotional Attributes unite with that of Malchus*. For a new fact is then produced.

This is why certain prophecies were accompanied by an action. In this manner, they were able to manifest themselves here below, in such a way that it would be difficult to nullify them, as the holy seforim* explain.

You will also consult the letter of the Alter Rebbe*, in the commentary appearing in the Siddur Mei'ah She'arim,[4] which states that the Maggid*,[5] when a thought came to him, would also express it through speech.

It results from all of this that the passing of Rachel* did indeed cause the cessation of her union with Yaakov*. Nonetheless, this situation does not contradict the possibility that the light may enter the level of Malchus* by traversing it, and even by becoming imbued with it. This is explained in an appendix to the first letter.

For all that, it is clear that bringing into existence an entirely new fact, uniting two opposite characteristics — the giving birth to a being identical to the one who conceived it, on the one hand, and the possession of an independent nature, on the other — is strictly impossible. This is why the drop of seminal fluid possesses a quality that intellectual influence does not possess, as various texts establish.

It is, however, quite clear that intellectual influence likewise passes through the Attribute of Malchus*, undergoing thereby concealments and contractions.

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach* festival,

You ask me about my chassidic discourses and talks. For the time being, I have not put them into form, with a few exceptions. But I am enclosing a copy of my letter addressed to all, on the occasion of Pesach*.[6] I hope that it will interest you.

No doubt what we discussed about the organization of a public Seder* remains in force this year as well.
