Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2065 — Personal Conduct

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem*,

Rav David Meir,[1]

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 24 Adar, as well as the previous one. You know the following saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*: "Why do you adopt a manner of conduct that allows one's personality to be sharply marked?" We must strengthen ourselves in everything pertaining to Torah* and mitzvos*. In this way, that which is connected to worldly concerns will present itself in a positive manner.

You also know the statement of our Sages, in tractate Gittin 7a, that "one must rise earlier than them,[2] go to sleep later than them, and go to the beis hamidrash*."

On the occasion of the festival of Pesach*, which is approaching — for us and for all Yisrael*, for the good — I wish you, together with the members of your household, to celebrate it in a kosher* and joyous manner, with true freedom.

I am enclosing what I wrote to someone, on this subject.[3] A general letter to all follows.[4]

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ד אדר וכן הקודם לו, וכבר ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, וואס דארפן מיר זיך מישען אין בעלבתישקייט, עלינו להתחזק בעניני תורה ומצות ובדרך ממילא יתוקנו הענינים פון וועלט בעלבתישקייט, וידוע ג"כ מרז"ל גיטין ז' ע"א, השכם והערב עליהם לבית המדרש כו', (ביאור ע"ד החסידות, בתו"א לב, א).

ולקראת חג הפסח הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה הנני בזה לאחל לו ולב"ב שיחיו שיחוגו אותו בכשרות ובשמחה מתוך חירות אמיתי, ומצו"פ מ"ש לאחד בזה, ובא במכ' כללי.
