Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2062 — Teshuvah

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Moshe Yehudah HaKohen [1],

Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of the yom tov of Pesach which is approaching for us and for all Yisrael for the good, I wish you and the members of your family to celebrate it in a kosher and freilichen* manner, with a feeling of true cheirus* [2].

Our Sages explain that the true geulah* is that which makes the yetzer hara* disappear, and consequently moral and physical worries. The Rambam specifies that this will be the case in the Messianic era. You will consult the end of chapter 9 of his Hilchos Teshuvah and the conclusion of his Hilchos Melachim.

Each year, when the yom tov of Pesach returns, yetzias Mitzrayim* takes place anew, as the Lev David of the Chida emphasizes in the name of the Arizal*. Such is the meaning of the verse "these days are commemorated and relived." It is when they are 'commemorated' that they are 'relived.'

Now, yetzias Mitzrayim foreshadows the coming of Moshiach, as it is said: "As in the days of your going out of Mitzrayim, I will show you wonders." You will also consult the Mishnah at the end of the third chapter of tractate Gittin, which says: "one checks the wine ... and the appearance of buds."

לקראת חג הפסח הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה הנני בזה לאחל לכת"ר ולכל ב"ב שיחיו שיחוגו אותו בכשרות ובשמחה מתוך חירות אמיתי כדרז"ל חירות מיצה"ר אשר במילא יהי' זה ג"כ חירות מדאגות הן ברוחניות והן בגשמיות, וכמבואר ברמב"ם שזהו הענין דימות המשיח, עיין שם הלכות תשובה ספ"ט וסוף הלכות מלכים. וידוע אשר יציאת מצרים [שמעוררים הענין עוד הפעם בפרט בימי חג הפסח בכל שנה ושנה, וכמובא בשם האריז"ל בספר לב דוד להחיד"א שזהו פירוש והימים האלה נזכרים (ואז הם) נעשים], ויצימ"צ ה"ז הכנה לזמן דביאת המשיח וכמ"ש כימי צאתך מאמ"צ אראנו נפלאות, [ועיין גם במשנה ספ"ג דגיטין בודקין את היין וכו' ובהוצאת סמדר כו'].
