Igrot Kodesh · Letter 206 — Debate on Soul's Response to Torah Study in Heavenly Yeshiva
Volume 2 · Letter 38
To the great Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem, of immense erudition, Rav M. D.[1]
I greet you and bless you.
I reply to your letter:
A) You have deduced from my letter that when one studies a Torah* explanation in this world, its author takes it up again in the heavenly Yeshiva*. You therefore indicate that one can, in this way, only cause his lips to move in his grave. His soul, on the other hand, which resides in the celestial spheres, has nothing to do with all this. And it studies in the heavenly Yeshiva* according to the Torah* it learned while it was in this world, but not according to the manner in which its teaching is repeated here below.
I have found no element in your letter justifying such a distinction and I therefore maintain my position, previously developed — whether because it corresponds to the simple meaning, or because it is logical, or because it conforms to the words of our Sages*.
It is, first of all, the simple meaning of this explanation. By repeating the commentary developed by someone, one causes:
1. that he dwells,
2. that this dwelling is in both worlds at once. There are, of course, other ways of dwelling in one of these worlds. One can be in the physical world in the literal sense. One can also be in the World to Come through the practice of Torah* and Mitzvot*. In contrast, having one's own teaching repeated is the one and only means of being in both worlds at once.
It is also a logical explanation. If repeating these explanations causes the lips of their author to move in the grave, how much more must his soul benefit from it, for it is the soul, above all, that studies Torah*. Nevertheless, Hashem desires that it do so while it is still under the sway of the evil inclination, according to the expression of tractate Shabbat* 89a.
It is, finally, what follows from the words of our Sages*. I cited, in my previous letter, tractate Bechorot* 31b, which defines these two worlds as follows: in this world through the lips of the one who repeats the teaching, and in the other world through the lips of the one whose name was mentioned. One can conclude that the same applies to other commentators on the verse "I shall dwell in both worlds," which is possible precisely through this teaching.
And if one argues that the author of this teaching dwells in any case in the other world, even if his words are not repeated, one can no longer understand what the Tosafot* say in tractate Yevamot* 96b, noting that one speaks here of the heavenly Yeshiva* and not of the World to Come.
One must conclude that, because he taught Torah* beforehand and his teaching is repeated once more, this[2] is now fulfilled. For the reward of the Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself, which, in this case, allows him to sit in the heavenly Yeshiva*. You will also consult page 22 of the Chanoch LaNaar*[3], according to which one who has left this world receives a reward at the moment a good deed is performed thanks to him, even after his death. This statement is made regarding his son, but it applies equally to his disciple.
B) The Yerushalmi* Berachot* cites two images illustrating the verse "He causes the lips of those who sleep to move" — that of old wine and that of spiced wine[4]. You argue that these two images correspond to two types of teaching that one can repeat: one belonging to the deep part of Torah* and one pertaining to its revealed aspect and its analysis. Several questions may be raised in this regard:
1. Why did King David or Rabbi Yochanan* not express the wish that precisely such teachings be repeated?
2. In tractates Yevamot* and Bechorot*, Rabbi Yochanan* and Rav Sheshet* spoke of the revealed teaching of Torah* and emphasized this — which is incomprehensible according to the opinion that cites the image of old wine.
3. Spiced wine is wine to which honey and condiments are added, according to the Pesikta of Rav Kahana*. Now, tractate Chagigah* 13a identifies honey with the hidden part of Torah*. The Yerushalmi* Shekalim* is even more explicit: "Of what benefit is it to him? Bar Nezira said: It is as though he drank spiced wine. Rabbi Yitzchak* said: It is as though he drank old wine." According to your explanation, this means nothing.
In my humble opinion, one must distinguish between the teaching itself that is repeated — which necessarily has a limit, whether it belongs to the revealed part of Torah* or to its hidden teaching — and its commentary, which, on the other hand, has no limit. And the Yerushalmi* must be understood according to its literal meaning. It asks what benefit it can be to the author of a teaching to have it given once more in the same form. It then answers that the Mishnah* is comparable to old wine and the Gemara* to spiced wine.
According to one opinion, the teaching developed in the heavenly court is comparable to spiced wine — meaning that new developments and new aspects will be found in it each time. According to a second opinion, it evokes old wine — an ancient teaching, in which one finds renewed delight each time one tastes it again.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson*
