Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2056 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 190
By the grace of Hashem,
24 Adar 5713,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have just received your letter of motzaei Shabbos Parshas Ki Sisa. In its time, I also received your previous letter, and I read with dismay what you write about yourself.
I have already related several times what was told to me by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us [1]. He told me that he once granted a yechidus* to a man who wished to know how he could rectify certain sins. This man described his moral situation in frightening terms, and my father-in-law, the Rebbe, replied to him by emphasizing how grave it is to speak lashon hara*, both about one's fellow and about oneself. You will understand what I mean.
In my humble opinion, one can understand it more precisely on the basis of the difference, established in various texts, between lashon hara and motzi shem ra*. The latter is a lie, while the former may also be the truth. You will consult [2] in this regard the commentary of the Rambam on the Mishnah, at the beginning of the first chapter of tractate Avos, and in Hilchos Deos, chapter 7, paragraph 2.
This prohibition is particularly grave according to the explanations of Chassidus, which emphasize that, by bringing out a defect in one's friend or even in oneself, it very often happens that one transfers it from the world of thought to that of speech [3]. Obviously, as long as it remains in thought, it is not followed by any effect. But it is no longer so when it is expressed in speech. It can then cause harm. Our Sages emphasize that "lashon hara kills three persons [4]." How much more so in your case, since you have even written it [5], and have thus moved into action.
May Hashem help you to take the resolve to strengthen your positive action, that is, to illuminate your neshamah and the portion of the world entrusted to you, by redoubling your ardor for Torah and mitzvos, as well as for the luminary of Torah, that is, the teaching of Chassidus. For if a little light dispels much darkness, all the more so is this the case for much light.
You know that, by nature, one who occupies the function of a shochet* belongs to the realm of severity, as our Sages emphasize in tractate Shabbos 156a. Perhaps this is the reason for what you write about yourself. Nevertheless, the purpose of avodas Hashem is to transform one's natural feelings. If you make an effort in this direction, you will know hatzlachah*.
The Purim money you sent me, for yourself and for the members of your family, has been transmitted to its recipient. It is said that one confers a merit upon someone, even in his absence. Nevertheless, in order that this practice should have an educational value, since according to tractate Kiddushin 30a chinuch* continues until the age of twenty-four, it would be good for your son to give a few coins toward this collection, in addition to what you gave in his name.
I enclose for you the kuntres* that has just appeared. No doubt you will make its content available to as many people as possible.
With my brachah for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach,
Notes:
[1] See, in this regard, letter no. 1593.
[2] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Later remark: the Sdei Chemed, Klalim, ch. 30, par. 63, cites several proofs of this."
[3] One gives it an effective expression.
[4] The one who says it, the one who hears it, and the one of whom it is said.
[5] In the form of a letter.
